I went to a modest mouse show back in the day, and the band that opened for them stole the show tbh. Man Man. they went flat out, and we all had a great time.
New Orleans HOB 2007? I was at that show and it was one of the first ones that came to mind when I read the thread title.
Modest Mouse's sound was awful for that show. It was my first time seeing them and I was a little disappointed.

The Alarm opening for the Pretenders at the Saenger in the 80s. I had heard the Stand before, and it was good, but their new album Declaration had just come out. The whole crowd was on their feet from the first note and I was on my feet pumping my fist for songs I had never heard the whole show. The crowd was super pumped by the time Chrissie took the stage and destroyed the place. She threatened to quit playing at one point unless the security guards backed off let people come up to the stage. Great night.

YESSIR. wasn’t sure of the year, but that sounds right. Luckily I had seen modest mouse a few times before that show, but that’s the last time I’ve seen them.

No Doubt opening up for Bush at the Cajundome.. sound was terrible for all 3 bands (Goo Goo Dolls played second), but Gwen had a shitload of energy.

saw Pantera open for Megadeth at Cleveland Music Hall early 90's ish? Suicidal Tenedencies also played as the main opener right before Megadeth...Pantera blew both of them off the stage ..Honestly Megadeth was pretty bad . Dave was not into it .
Also, Another great opener was White Zombie opening for Anthrax back in the day .

Alice Cooper opening for Motley Crue on the Crue’s “Final Tour” in 2015
I agree, they outshined Motley Crue the night I saw them. I've been to a lot of Alice Cooper shows, and they've all been great.
Ted Nugent put on a hell of a show opening for Kiss, can't remember the exact year but it was late 90s or early 00s.

Not the best but a nice trainwreck.
A very inebriated Hank Jr. opening for the early ‘90s incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. He only played parts of songs and at one point broke out into Cat Scratch Fever.

A couple of bands have already been mentioned. Alice Cooper was better than the Crue. The Struts I saw as a headliner at Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill. I saw Eagles of Death Metal open for Mastodon a few years ago and I thought Eagle's set was better. I don't know about being the best, I've seen a lot of bands, but they definitely had a better show than the headliner. For best, I might have to go with Dream Theater and Emerson Lake and Palmer opening for Deep Purple.

Alice in Chains for Van Halen at the Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport.
Best surprise or unknown was Limp Bizkit when they were brand new and totally unknown at the State Palace in 1997. Never even heard of them. Was going to see Helmet and Korn. That first album, Three Dollar Bill Y'all, was some pretty good shite and they tore it up live. Then they quickly went to shite after that.
Worst was Collective Soul for VH in Dallas at the now non-existent Reunion Arena. They had about 50 people on stage playing all kinds of instruments.

Bruh, I already claimed this one. They were so unknown at the time my ticket stub says James Addiction.
The following night we went to see U2 at the Assembly Center.

I remember but I didn't go to U2. I think I was over them by then.
