The first album I bought on compact disc was Metallica's self-titled "Black Album," after getting a CD player as a Christmas gift in 1995.
I previously bought the Black Album on cassette when it was released in 1991.
When I got an iPhone and music was now available digitally, the first record I downloaded was the Black Album.
When music is implanted in our brains someday, I'll start with the Black Album. It's a tradition, now.

My first CD player was a new stereo system for my room that I got for Christmas or Birthday
looked similar to this
I don’t think I ever had a portable one with headphones.

The first CD I bought for myself was Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion. It's still my stranded on a desert island with only one album choice. I never tire of it.

I honestly don't, and that makes me kinda sad.
1990 is also a guess.
Makes me sad too.

Every. Single. Thread.
I honestly don't know myself. I started out with 8 tracks then cassettes forever and I don't think I bought my first CD until I had graduated LSU in 90 and moved to Houston.
My first 8 track was Glass Houses and my first cassette was Kilroy Was Here but zero recollection of my first CD.
I didn't have a device I could play it on so why would I buy one?
Eta agree with alxtiger that it makes me sad I can't remember. I'm going to have to think a bit about this.
Eta I *think* it was This Mortal Coil. I had played the cassettes so much they developed chipmunks so I believe this was important enough to me to buy something that would last "forever".
To be fair I also still have almost every CD I ever purchased still chilling so maybe I should look back through them.

Can't recall what the first CD I bought was, maybe Dinosaur Jr "You're Living All Over Me" but that's a guess. I do recall using CDs on air at KLSU in 1985 or so but it was still rare to have albums on CD at the station, it was still probably 95% vinyl. At the time, since I had access to a huge vinyl library, I would bring in blank cassettes and record albums so I wasn't buying much music. I don't think the first car I bought when I graduated had a CD player and I bought a new head unit with a CD player 2 or 3 years later....92 or 93.

The very first CD I purchased was before I even owned a player was Vienna by Ultravox. I had a friend record it for me onto tape. Forced to buy a player, that was my first listen from my own collection. My actual first listen to a CD was Sports by H and the News. (Not something I'd drop a needle on but it was my first experience.)
My next search was Pornography by The Cure, but all the record store had was The Head On The Door, so I picked that up as my second CD of all time.

I remember resisting for a bit, because I had so many records and cassettes... but my first CD was summer of '89... Hoodoo Gurus - Magnum Cum Louder..
Never bought cassettes again.. don't miss them and don't get the revival... eventually replaced what I deemed essential in my collection, with CDs...
I honestly don't know where those cassettes are... I would bet there are a bunch of tape cases in my Mom's attic.. or she ditched them... who knows..
I do regret selling my vinyl back then... I really wish I had held on to it..
edit: I believe I used a walkman with a tape adapter before I had an actual CD player in my car... struggling to remember what car I had an actual CD player in..

I think we talked about the fact your DJd at KLSU while I was in school there and I probably drove you crazy with Colourbox requests.
First 45..hmmm I'll have to think
First album is easy: Pyromania followed by the deluxe Heavy Metal soundtrack.

I got my first CD player for my 14th birthday. It was a 6 disc changer.
The first CD I bought was The Cure Mixed up.
My first car didn't have a CD player. It didn't even have a tape deck. It was a fleet vehicle my dad bought from his job and only had a very basic AM/FM radio.
Once it was handed down to me, and I saved up some money, I got an Alpine tape deck installed at Mobile One in Metairie. I couldn't afford a CD player. So I used one of those adapters shaped like a cassette that plugged into the headphone jack of my discman.

It was this bad boy, and it had to have been 1996-97.
