You asked a question, and then listed the two allowed answers.
It's like saying, "Which is the best NFL franchise of all time, the Cowboys or the Steelers?" Rather than just saying "which is the best NFL franchise of all time?"
The vast, vast majority of music fans would pick neither of the bands you selected as the greatest American band of all time.
