Probably true.

But Iike Otis more as a performer.

Sam sang so as not to scare the white folks.

This one and A Change Is Gonna Come really show his talent.

Cory Wells' version is better.

I mean for a guy that sounded effortless, Nat King Cole was fantastic. Otis Redding was a great singer. Elvis had that kind of range where he could twang it or go gospel, or add a little power to it (and could operate tenor to baritone as necessary). People sleep on Ray Charles, but he was a great singer. The Righteous Brothers was a great singing duo. (ETA: Obviously I should have mentioned Marvin Gaye at this point.)

Paul Rodgers was a great singer as was Paul Carrack. For a modern sound, Chris Cornell was just a great, great rock singer.

But Cooke was smooth, soulful and just had that extra something special. Almost as effortless as Nat King Cole, but could impart more emotion in the voice.

I've always said his was my favorite male voice. Just pure gold. Not the biggest range, by far, but certainly the best voice within whatever range he had.

Agreed. I don't know how good he was technically but I always thought he had one of the best naturally sounding voices I've ever heard.

It's not. That's simply a "Look at me I'm a good singer too" cover.

A Change Is Gonna Come was partly inspired by Cooke and his band getting turned away from a hotel in Shreveport because they were black.

Beat me to it! Even though he's not in the same soul/pop genre, I always thought Nat King Cole had the smoothest voice I've ever heard. This song is one of the greatest ever recorded, IMHO.

And how someone can say Otis is overrated is beyond me. For someone who died at only 26 years old his voice exuded the soul of a much older singer.

There are a lot of great vocalists. Are you talking R&B and Motown only?

Paul Rodgers
Lou Gramm
Jim Morrison

Very worthy white guy. Great guitar player, songwriter and singer.
His " Every Time You Go Away" was just so good.

Yea that's pretty powerful.

A black man singing a song about civil rights to a clapping all white crowd the same year that outlawed segregation in public places.

Good stuff.

Never heard that. I've heard Hendrix mentioned as the greatest guitarist ever. Never heard Cooke described as a "pretty good singer for a black guy".

I do know that Cooke, himself was a raging racist.
