How are classic rock songs picked for radio play?

Every "classic rock" radio station in America (typically named the eagle or river or something similar) plays mostly the same collection of songs. Songs that were hits by the artist when they came out in the 70s/80s and have simply stayed on the radio for 50 years. We know this. My question is...how or why did THOSE particular songs come to be THE songs that just get played for eternity? Often times bands will have far, far more good songs (that are a radio friendly ~3 minutes and don't have bad language) that never see the light of day. Is there any kind of reason or rationale for how the radio rotation came to be permanently set forever?
Once I hit adulthood I have occasionally gotten a wild hair and tried to look a bit more into someone's catalog that I haven' been as familiar with. Often times I am BLOWN AWAY at how many songs by that band I'll really love but have never heard before since the radio only plays 1 or 2 of their songs over and over.

I have no idea.
But I spay $12/mo. for Spotify and have everything available.
Thinking back....I believe they have a free trial period too.

It's like the songs they pick for an artists "greatest hits" album. Who made that decision? I guess you could just go off of sales but that doesn't really work for lesser known/selling artists and doesn't work for the great bands who put out great albums w/ no bad songs. Some of the fails Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan and Yes.

It is always the same sons. There is over 60 years of potential songs to use. Unless they take requests, there shouldn't be a repeated song for 6 months or more. I really hate that on a pretty regular basis, the radio comes out of a news break and I have to hear Tom Petty.

Yeah, so many great songs by Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, Hendrix, Floyd, Clapton, ETC that never get airplay....
There was a Classic Rock station in Austin TX in the late 80s that did this thing( they may still do for all I know) at 5pm everyday called "Getting the Led Out" where they would play three Zeppelin songs in a row. I remember they would take requests and it ended up being a bunch of great non-typical radio songs that got played which was really cool.

quote:album singles...back when that was a thing. 99% of classic rock radio is songs that were released separately as 45 rpm 7" singles. The A side was the "hit", the B side could be an album track or a non-album track.
How are classic rock songs picked for radio play?
and remember, those singles became "classic hit" because the were played all the time. its kind of a chicken-egg thing.
on rare occasions, at album-oriented-rock stations, DJ's would ignore or bypass the single(s) and play album tracks they thought were better...thats the other 1%
(NOTE: all math in this post is theoretical)

Classic Rock radio has ruined a lot of songs for me.
Sweet Home Alabama
Reelin' in the Years
Shooting Star
To name just a few.

It's probably a good thing since the radio will over play all the good songs until you're sick of them.

But that was before he threatened to kill me

iHeart radio done me in with over the air....
...and I'm sure had a hand in deciding.
Internet radio is your friend and I'll usually support one or two a year and then rotate. Something about a DJ on a college or public broadcast. I shoot for a mix of old and new and noth'n ambient.

Consultants program this shite. Like someone said, focus groups and polls. It's basically the greatest hits that don't offend anyone.
Somewhere along the line, we went from "Let's turn them on" to "Let's not turn anyone off".

We have the Eagle 106.9 in Houston. They advertise as a "classic rock" station. It's as much as a classic top-40 as it is classic rock.
And when in fact they do play a classic rock band, it rarely deviates from a few songs from a given band, e.g., Scorpions, "Rock Me Like a Hurricane," Journey "Don't Stop Believing," Whitesnake, "Here I Go Again."
They have distilled 3 decades of great music to a shadow of itself.

Back in the 70’s, FM 102 in Monroe used to be 100% album rock, I guess like Deep Tracks on Sirius is now. It was very good.

quote:Sorta related...every once in a while, I'll leave XM on America's Top 40. It's amazing how many songs made it as far as top 10 on the charts, yet didn't escape the 70s. I hear songs for the first time all the time on there, and I am old.

We have a local station (KSHE) that was the first album rock station in the Midwest and even they've succumbed to a degree due to national ownership. Another local station (93.1 KBDZ) has picked up the mantle and it's fantastic. They'll play anything from the early British Invasion through hair bands and metal. You could hear "Go All The Way" by The Raspberries to Bob Seger to Metallica and the Animals "House of the Rising Sun" back to back to back.
EDIT: Just got out of the car and 93.1 played ...
"Star Rider" - Forienger
"Saturday In The Park" - Chicago
"All I Ever Wanted" - Santana
"Showdown" - ELO
