They were very good, but it's a little dicey to crown any of those bands as
"the best"

Not saying they're Grunge albums but I'd say after Vs.

Saying Pearl Jam isn't Grunge is wild. The 2 founding members, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, were key figures in the Seattle Sub-pop music scene long before "Grunge" existed.

Ten and Vs are great albums, but to disregard everything they did after that is a mistake.

people on this board fear the downvote so they don’t say what the truly like when it comes to bands some have trashed in the past. So now everyone trashes them. It’s also Wild and embarrassing.

That's the thing, im saying Grunge isn't a musical style. Nirvana, AIC, PJ share geography not a musical style other than Alt Rock.

Those aren't the only bands in the genre. Melvins, Tad, Screaming Trees, and some other have a lot in common with Nirvana at least.

Truly. Pearl Jam gets a bad rap on this board, and I'm guessing it has to do with the band's liberal political stance.

PJ gets a bad rap after Vedder kicked Abbruzzese out and took over most of the songwriting and the music went downhill. The first 2 albums are perfection, their political leanings don't change that.

It'd be fine if the bands you listed were the only ones named when listing Grunge. But they aren't, and people even try to shove STP in there which is ridiculous.

Good read on orgins of "Grunge"

Writer makes case for Mother Love Bone starting "Grunge". Hate that term. Posting this link to hopefully get a new MLB convert, lol. Took me a few listens, now they are in my top 10.

Like most music terms, it’s in the ear of the beholder. No clear cut easily identifiable definition…

Dave Krusen played drums on Ten.

Abbruzzese played drums on Vs. and Vitalogy.

Vitalogy was, to me, a perfect album for when it was released. Much of it was this mean, nasty, 'frick you', angsty sound which certainly brought in more of a punk influence and was likely the closest album to sounding like Nirvana.

No Code they definitely slipped a bit, but that album is still an absolute banger.

Yield? I mean, if you're a PJ fan and didn't like that album, I don't know what to tell you. Different than previous releases? Sure. But song-wise, it's right up there with their first 3 albums.

Post-Yield? Yeah, very hit and miss and no complete, good albums imo. The last few have been absolute DUDS.

Mad Season

Top 5 album of the 90's. Powerful, bluesy, heavy, it bled weakness through strength in a weird way....really emblematic of addiction (there was a lot of it in that band). There aren't many albums that can make my stomach churn from the right notes hitting at just the right times, Mad Season did and still does. Beautiful piece of art that still holds up today.

Yes im aware Krusen played on Ten. Abbruzzese brought those songs to life live though.

I'll have to revist Yield, haven't heard it in years.

If Lane Staley would not have died they would’ve been way bigger than Nirvana or Pearl Jam

Layne lived another 8 years (to the day) after Kurt died.
but pretty much never left his apartment after about '98 or so.

I think its because they are the more generic sounding of these bands... no real edge to them...

I saw them open for Van Halen in BR in 1991.
I hated them.
I wasn't a grunge guy and I didn't know who they were.

Boy I missed out enjoying them.
Turned out to be my favorite grunge band.

Saw them open for Van Halen early 1990s.

A music experience highlight for sure.
