As you likely know, a whole stanza from Dire Strait's "Money For Nothing" (references to Boy George with multiple uses of "faagot") has been missing from airplay for some time.

Listening to 80s on 8 on Sirius yesterday and "Funky Cold Medina" and the whole part about "Sheena" (when we got undressed it was a big ol mess, Sheena was a man) was edited out.

Unreal, but not surprised.

I was listening to 90s Rap on Spotify. All about the Benjamin's comes in.

Lil Kim has a verse talking about sucking dick and fricking.

There are violent references.

The line.
"You should do like we do, stack chips like Hebrews" now has a record skip over "Hebrews".

Weird you bring this up. I was in the truck the other day and "Money for Nothing" came on. I was fully expecting it to be edited out, but nope. Clear as day.

103.7 in Hattiesburg dont give a frick

Ridiculous. They're mostly falling on deaf ears with people old enough to remember when that song came out- but we aren't who they're trying to brainwash....Sad.

slightly off topic but kinda not:

I was watching The Office on TV the other day, can't remember what channel probably comedy central or something. Anyways it's the episode where the office thinks Andy is gay and it finally comes to a head when Kevin is ribbing him in the kitchen. Can't remember the setup but kevin goes "I bet you'd like that" and andy is like what do you mean and kevin goes "because it's men's butts" as he's cracking up laughing. But they EDITED OUT MEN'S BUTTS. No not actual pictures or closeups of nude men. Like the actual word men's, followed by the word butts.

"what do you mean?"
"Because of [beeeeeeeep]"

Unbelievable

Elton John's Island Girl was a big hit in 1975 or '76. I don't think that they will ever play the song again with those lyrics. Great tune by the way.

"I see your teeth flash, Jamaican honey so sweet
Down where Lexington cross 47th Street
Oh she's a big girl, she's standing six-foot three
Turning tricks for the dudes in the big city
Island girl
What you wanting with the white man's world?
Island girl
Black boy want you in his island world
He want to take you from the racket boss
He want to save you, but the cause is lost
Island girl, island girl, island girl
Tell me what you wanting with the white man's world
Well she's black as coal, but she burn like a fire
And she wrap herself around you like a well-worn tire
You feel her nail scratch your back just like a rake, oh oh
He one more gone, he one more John who make the mistake
Island girl
What you wanting with the white man's world?
Island girl
Black boy want you in his island world..."

Good ol' Bernie Taupin's writing.

Remember when it was the religious right that insisted on editing and bleeping out "problematic" lines on screen and on the radio, and the left lost their fricking minds over it?

The Puritans ain't got shite on the modern progressive when it comes to suppressing "problematic" things.

I heard a song on Spotify yesterday and the entire song was about sucking dick - and it wasn't subtle about it in any shape or form. She just came right out and said she was gonna suck dick.

ETA - gf found the song for me - it's "Deepthroat" by cupcakKe

Was actually a shot at old school conservatives, just like Pink Floyd the Wall. I’m sure neither band see’s the irony in the current social environment.

What’s the name of the song?

Gonna have it playing on a loop around the house for the wife. Maybe she will get the hint the old eggplant needs some attention.

I do not think it was a reference to "Boy George" or any other literal homosexual (NTTAWWT).

He was literally inspired by a working man in a store watching MTV. The first person character of the song is a person bemoaning that rock stars (like songwriter Knopfler) are getting their "money for nothing", while he, the working guy, has to work hard for his money, "install microwave ovens" and move "color TVs".

The songwriter (Knopfler) wasn't calling anyone a "f-a-g-g-o-t", he was quoting someone calling someone quite like himself (Knopfler) a "f-a-g-g-o-t". IF homosexuals are offended by this use of the term (directed at no one in particular), I understand, but it is art and art risks offense. It is not per se, insulting, demeaning or even homophobic at its core.

(ETA: I hear it unedited on classic rock stations. If you listen to all of the lyrics, the guy isn't talking about a homosexual if he is getting his "Money for nothing, and chicks for free". And, even if it is a slur, the character is not derogating, he has grudging respect for the scam if nothing else.)

But, nuance died a long, long time ago.

You can sing about running a train, slapping a dog arse hoe, putting these chicken heads on the streets, a house full of whores.

But how dare you talk about a chick with a dick deceiving a man in hopes to have homosexual sex.

Degrading women = good

Calling a clown and clown = bad

This is demonstrably false as others have stated. 98.1 still plays it in full.

They did. But in the midst of that, Tipper Gore was also leading the charge against (mostly) heavy metal lyrics.

Last I heard they still let the lyrics fly about the retard in "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa which always makes me giggle.
