CP3 to the Lakers is an improvement over Westbrook but won’t help them much in the long term.
He can run the offense and is good friends with LeBron but he is older than dirt and owed a guaranteed $15m ($30.8m total) in 23-24 and $30m unguaranteed in 24-25.
That means they are tying up more long term money past when Westbrick and LeBron will be off the books while, also, not necessarily being a trade asset because partially guaranteed contracts are tradeable based on their guaranteed amount.
This gets them out of one bind but puts them in a new one. Especially since CP3 has a history of injuries and gets very run down once you get to the playoffs.

don’t have to worry about the playoffs if you don’t make the playoffs

True.
Just pointing out that even this Laker pipe dream has a very limited upside for them. Hell of a swing in fortunes for such a historic franchise in a few years.

What would be the incentive for the Suns to trade CP3 for Westbrook? They are coming off of the best regular season in franchise history with CP3 and Westbrook is no longer an NBA player. The Lakers would need to put up multiple draft picks just to get the Suns to answer the phone.
Which would be hilarious being that the Rockets traded Paul plus picks to the Thunder just 3 seasons ago. Oh how the turn tables.

Apparently from a Chicago radio interview. I have no interest in listening to this for context, but if the Lakers keep the payroll under $155 they can get Lavine back in a S&T. Lavine is a UFA so Chicago can't stop it. If the Lakers are willing to give up a 1st to dump Westbrook I can see it happening. Send him to a team like the Magic or the Pistons and get a rotational player like Terrence Ross or Olynk back.
The Lakers were unwilling to go further into debt for LeBron at the deadline, but I could see them giving up a top 4 protected pick for Lavine.

I don't see any logical way the Lakers can get Lavine without adding AD in the trade.

Lavine has a knee issue that isn't getting better. I mean I'm not wishing the dude's career over but I wouldn't cry if the Lakers spend the max on him and he barely plays.

They’d have to give up a lot more than Russ and a first 5 years from now.
It would take the 1st just hope to move Russ and take back garbage. Let alone Lavine.

He's a UFA so there's really not anything Chicago can do if there's a team with cap space he'd be willing to go to. If Portland had interest in him that's enough of a threat that Lakers 2nds and a big trade exception starts looking a lot better than Lavine walking for nothing.

“Willing to go to” is the operative term.
He may get leverage from the likes of Portland but he wouldn’t sign there. And Chicago could call his bluff by telling him to sign there rather than trading him to LA for a ham sandwich.

Lakers cannot create the space required to take him in.
Lavine is going to get a max, if Lakers were to give it to him, add Nunn and THT they would be at 134 million in 5 players. That would only leave them 13 million to fill 10 roster spots, which means they would pretty much have to have all undrafted rookies.
It will be pretty much impossible for them to sign Lavine, trade Westbrick without taking ANY salary back, and fill out the team.

They absolutely can stop it. They can't stop him from leaving, but they can absolutely stop the Lakers for poaching him for nothing. You may be talking about Unibrow and assets for Lavine.

The Lakers would have to do a 3 way trade with a cap space team like Detroit or Orlando where Russ goes to the 3rd team and Lavine to the Lakers.
For instance
Bulls - Terrence Ross, Lakers 2nds
Magic - Westbrook, top 4 protected 2027 Lakers 1st
Lakers - Lavine S&T
tradenba says this works and it's using cap figures for the 22-23 season.

LeBonk is basically the only player in modern history who has walked and given up the money it costs to do it. Lavine doesn't have the external revenue sources that LeBonk had.
