I just did a search on the 2021 mock drafts / prospects. He doesn’t appear in the top 60 of any I have found.

Being on the right team with the right staff is a big key here. Willie is one of the small number of coaches in the league that would use these guys while trusting his eyes and giving these guys opportunities. There are numerous NBA players buried on the NBA benches because they aren't given the opportunities because they aren't the prototype at the positions and no matter how well they practice, they aren't getting off the bench.

We are really fortunate to have a coach with this perspective.

the draft projections for jose were universally 2nd round to undrafted. nobody saw this coming including the pelicans.

all the credit goes to jose

No one saw him becoming this. However, I believe we were interested in using a 2nd on him but instead flipped that pick and signed him as a UDFA because he wanted to be with us.

I’m half remembering an article on that one but I believe it was the case.

yes i think that was actually an interview with jose where that came out. his agent had told him that the pels were not going to use their pick on him, but that if he were willing they would commit to an UDFA 2-way. jose said yes and here we are

Strange as it sounds...Jose's defense...is the reason I wouldn't want him to be closing ahead of CJ and we all know CJ is no prize on defense. And btw...I'm talking about playoff closing time. Opponents have no mercy come playoff time, when they spot a weakness they will hammer on it at crunch time.

It's just a matter of Jose being too small, nothing more and to be honest, I'm hoping Dyson can advance to the point he might be a prospect at closing time instead of CJ since I think we will have plenty of offense...to make up for having Herb & Dyson both on the court at closing time. Who knows...they might even improve their offensive game by playoff time.

(Edit) And to go even further down this hole...I would not have Val anywhere near the court, come playoff closing time. If the other team wants to go "small ball" with us, down the stretch, I'm even hoping Trey could be part of the closing 5, to give us more shooting if we've got Herb & Dyson out there.

He fails several broad, entry level metrics by scouts

Old
Small
Fringe athleticism

He’s not a unicorn but certainly the odds we’re exponentially against him

Did he have an ugly girlfriend too? If so, he lacked confidence. /Moneyball

Right, Jose's are the exceptions not the rule.

But sometimes dudes with that level of heart and commitment, who are great teammates, work hard, and have specific skill (in his case, being an absolute pest) break through.

Helps that he appears to be both a natural and a real student of the game.

He worked out with Tony Parker over the Summer. He said that a lot of stuff Parker told him was things he already knew, which actually made him feel pretty good that he was picking up on this stuff naturally before it was pointed out.
