Maybe he is a top 20 player, maybe he isn't, but he did make 2nd team all-nba last year. He's an excellent player.

The salary cap has almost doubled what it was 8 years ago.

That’s a lot of dough for a guy who’s not even the best player on his team.

I think it's debatable over if he's equal to or better than Tatum. But a team shouldn't have multiple supermax or even max players. There aren't 30 of those guys in the league. They should be spread out. Also contracts should be incentive laiden. I don't care if he makes 100M in a season, if he's great..

Dang, isn’t Tatum due for a contract extension next year also? I wonder what his will be at.

If they're willing to pay the tax for it, why not?

I am hoping this more of an outlier than the norm. The 2nd best on the team is getting paid over 50 million a year, wth is going on!?

When the most you can pay a player is 35% of the cap, wouldn't it make sense to attempt to get 2 players who are each good enough to qualify for that 35% and then split the remaining 30% on the rest of the roster?

ETA: this would just be for teams operating under the cap. Most of these teams with 2 players on max contracts are operating over the cap, so they have more than 30% remaining to work with due to Bird rights.

With the way the NBA salary cap/max contracts are structured, one of the biggest issues that teams face is having a player that is 20th-30th best in the league. You're in a situation where you have to pay them the max, because if you don't someone else will, but at the same time, they probably aren't really worth it. It's absurd that the current system pretty much ensures that the best player and the 30th best player get paid the same amount. There is a vast gap in talent between those two players.

Bill Simmons said it best a while back, if you have to pay your star a 35% max contract, you want that player to be Steph Curry not Bradley Beal.

I don't believe in paying the tax. There should be a hard cap..

Why not?

If there were no max salaries, a dude like Jokic or Giannis or prime Lebron is easily worth $60mil in today's salary cap times. Or if you have an owner who doesn't mind paying the tax, then you can add a quite a few more dudes who are worth this amount.

Sorry, I should've clarified. I mean a player of jalen brown's caliber.

There are only a handful of guys in the league that I could see getting 60 or 70 mil a year.

Maybe. But there is a alot of debate over who is the better player, especially in Boston. Brown should have his own team and they are holding each other back. It's what happens with two Max guys. You can't star in the spotlight when you have to share it..

What is this take man

Pretty much every championship team has multiple players earning their max salary, multiple stars who share the spotlight well together

Each one of those 4 has one clear cut star.

Now there were others on max or near max deals. But none are franchise players and we're all grossly overpaid..

And its how the nba works and has been for several years. The top 30ish players get max or near max money, and the team with your bird rights can pay more than the others to help keep a competitive balance in the league.
