He is, but if Bain is there he has to be the pick.

I’m coming around to the idea of drafting the best offensive weapon available at #8. If Staley really has the defense at number nine in the league, well how many times during the Brees era did we say that a top 10 defense would’ve won us multiple Super Bowls?

FYI, for perspective that was 9th overall in yard per game. Looking at pro football reference, and these were some of the other rankings:

4th in total yards per play
4th against the pass (total yards)
11th in passing yards per attempt
19th against the rush (total yards)
7th in yards per carry
16th in points
17th in percentage of drives ending in a score

Edit: saw a few other interesting stats, and the penalty stats below

Also saw penalty stats
24th in total defensive penalties
24th in defensive penalty yards
13th in automatic 1st downs

So… even better, if you can find a few run stuffers

I addressed that bit in another post, that if certain other positions have a tier 1 player, especially DE for instance, compared to Love being generational, you still have to heavily consider going DE instead because of the cap implications, lack of quality/young DEs in FA, and the plethora of quality and young HBs in FA.

In other words, things would have to fall an exact way for Love to be the pick, and I don't think it's likely all of these things line up.

Drafting Love would be the definition of “contract value”

Compare current rb salaries to receiver salaries and tell me about ‘contract value’ again….

Jacobs is about as good as you can get for a running back, led the nfl in rushing not long ago. He makes 12 million a year. That’s what he got on the open market.

And quite a few people, Chad was one of them, were saying we had to trade Shaheed b/c he will get 25 a year.

I think this show that we played from behind a lot, but still managed to limit huge run plays most games and not give up consistent chunks of yards on the ground.

I'd be very interested in what this looked like in both wins vs losses and in games started by Rattler vs Shough.

As much as I would love Love in black and gold I totally agree with you.

Feel like the top tier running back selection is always a failure when it’s done by a depleted team. It’s that second team with a stronger roster that puts them over the top. Look at Henry and Barkley as recent examples.

There is also a disconnect between what we all thought the defense was going to be versus what it a actually was that is having an effect on this debate

Not too bad. But don’t need a vet QB and absolutely don’t spend draft pick on a punter. Are you kidding?

1. Give Brandon Staley a raise - yes. It’s not like it goes against the cap. No downside to this

2. Sign Chris Olave and Alontae Taylor to extensions - we’ll probably do what’s prudent with these two so, it’ll come down to price.

3. Hire Jon Gannon - im not qualified to weigh in on this one

4. Bring back Demario Davis and Cam Jordan - yes but nothing that will handcuff us in the future. I like one year deals if possible

5. Give Taysom Hill a retirement send-off - assuming he retires, absolutely, if he doesn’t, I would totally consider bringing him back. He frees up roster spots when we’re determining our active roster on Sundays. We can carry no fullback with Taysom if we need the spot. We can carry one less TE, one less RB if necessary, etc. . He gives up flexibility if we need to carry extra linemen, DBs, whatever. This is a big thing for the head coach. Payton would rant all the time about there not being enough spots and struggling about who to activate on that particular Sunday

6. Sign Teven Jenkins in free agency - im guessing any starting caliber interior OL will be over priced but, we need IOL so, we have to find one or two somewhere

7. Sign a veteran backup QB - No, at least not for mentorship of it. We have two former QBs on staff. Mariota would be nice to have if Shough goes down though.

8. Draft Jeremiyah Love at No. 8 - that’s so tempting. I think we should go BPA this whole draft (except QB and OT) we need good young players on rookie contracts. Im not keen at all about taking an RB that early but, we need some juice at the skill positions so, I’d live with it and eventually warm up to it more than likely.

9. Draft Chris Bell and Tim Keenan III - I guess

10. Draft a punter — any punter - No, there are more than 31 people in the world capable of being a NFL caliber punter. We need to find one not in the draft.
