Are we sure Tom Dempsey was good? WTF is this kick? Go to 2:30 for the oof
Also - watch him get absolutely lit up at midfield while his terrible kick was returned for a TD. The comments under the video are golden.

That film confused me. All that scoring and after the TD the player just gave the ball to the ref. I didn't see a single time when a player did a dance , or taunt the defense, and not a single instance of a player acting out shooting the opponent. And then I saw some very hard blocks without fights starting or penalty flags being thrown. Was that really an NFL game?

The best part was the vibrant solid gold SAINTS andzone and the deep ruby RED 49ers endzone.

So you were expecting a kicker with literally missing parts to not get lit up when he got blindsided?
I don’t get your point.

The last dude spiked it after returning the missed FG for a TD

Just for context, guys.
The 1970 49ers went to the NFC Championship game. It was the first of the Dallas-San Francisco NFCCG games. (It's available on YT for your viewing enjoyment):
1970 NFC Championship Game
The 1970 Saints had JD Robers as the interim coach, who would coach a few more years. Of all the bad coaches in Saints history, he may have been the worst, and that's saying something. In other words, they really really sucked in that era.
And you can't judge the straight-ahead kickers of yesteryear to today's standards. Soccer-style kicking changed the game.

It’s not like Dave Long and Jackie Burkett we’re gonna catch him

Why are you starting a thread talking shite about one of the most beloved Saints of all time?

I love TD19 I actually got a pic with him in my Muss Bertolino kit after a Dizzy Dean match at Galatas playground in ~ 1994
Me da regaled him with a tale of he was working that Sunday to meet a deadline and so he didnt use his ducats but heard it on the wireless and he and the lads shared a "huzzah" over the legendary dong.

Watching the video and from where he kicked it from, that attempt was just over 55 yards, which back then was a lot less makeable kick than it is today.
That is also borne out by the fact that the 49ers put a guy back near the goal line to catch and return a short kick that might land in the field of play, rather than having all 11 of their players up near the line to block the kick.
You should cut the man some slack, and not speak ill of the dead.. He kicked the longest field goal on record for years, which was only tied in 1998 (28 years later) and only broken in 2013 (43 years later). He also retired and lived here in Metairie; used to see him at Zuppardo's all the time. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2013 and died of COVID in 2020.

that looks like a 57 yard FG or so... hard to tell with that field being so ruined in the middle
The NFL record prior to 1970 was 56 yards. In fact, Dempsey was the only kicker to make a FG longer than 55 yards in 1970 (and only kicker to make a FG longer than 50 yards in 1969)
So not only was no kicker in the NFL making this FG but Dempsey, here are the kickers who made a field goal over 55 yards in the 70s:
Tom Dempsey (63 yards in 1970)
Don Crockett (57 yards in 1972)
Tony Franklin (59 yards in 1979)
Fun fact, the Saints went 2-11-1 that year.
Their wins and tie came against:
New York Giants - (9-5)
Detroit Lions - (10-4)
San Francsico 49ers - (10-3-1)
so even though that team stunk heavily, they still were able to be competitive against some good teams.

WTF is wrong with you. The man overcame birth defects to become an NFL player, and for decades the longest FG in the NFL. And, you - just a fing dumbass, keyboard jagoff.

Your schtick is a huge net negative on this website.

Anyone see on the kick return the 49rs guy faked falling down to block the Saints guy below the knees.
