Team gives him a $1M bonus to adjust the contract to help us with cap this year. So, he gets $1M that he wasn't gonna get before.
Additionally, if for some weird reason we keep him, he'll get a guaranteed $32M bonus. This prevents us from screwing him with the reduced salary and just keeping him. That only happens (in 2024) if he's on the roster on like March 17th or something of this year.
So by then he will be cut, 100%, guaranteed, no question.

The point you're missing is that Thomas was going to get paid regardless. If He got cut, the Saints would have had to pay him per the stipulations of the contract do in reality, he was owed substantially more than the one million received in the restructure.

Let this be a lesson to stop giving these huge contracts to WRs and RBs. Easy enough to get these positions taken care of in the draft and undrafted guys.
