ESPN radio just went in deep on Loomis for the Cooks signing then trading a premium pick for Vele.

They couldn’t believe his numbers this year. Nothing we didn’t know months ago.

6 catches on 13 targets, 54 yards one td.

Since when is a 4th round pick considered "premium" I am not saying I am in love with them doing the trade but "premium" is a big time stretch.

It is funny when the "premium" has to be thrown in there. A lot of people disagree with the value given up, but no need to try to make it sound so much worse.

When looking at the premium value of 4th rounders, the following percentage had a contract at some point in 2025. This does not mean they are still in the league now (as I am not going through 30+ players for each year) or are contributing anything to their team.
2024: 80.0%
2023: 69.7%
2022: 68.4%
2021: 60.0%
2020: 52.5%

So roughly 30% of these premium picks don't finish their 1st contract, and another 10-20% don't get a 2nd contract.

Do 7th rd picks now and ask why we gave up a 4 for Vele

If you don’t have the pick you’re definitely not guaranteed to hit on anything. The more bullets the better. Idk if you call it premium or what but a top ~100 pick for a league worst roster is pretty valuable.

If Loomis is your gm, and you draft like shite most years, they aren’t. The best teams are built in the mid rounds of drafts. Top of the 4th round is very valuable.

At worse, we coulda used it to move back into the 2nd with our 3rd. Or into the 3rd with it where the talent usually drops off in the draft.

Go look at the Rams drafts

Exactly. Most of the talent drop off is around this area. It’s always a good idea to have as many top 100 picks as possible. And this will likely be a top 100 pick or close to it.

I don't know why they gave up a 4th for him, hence my point about many of us did not agree with the value given. The purpose of my post was the consistent comment calling it a premium pick.

An FYI clarification, not an "actually...." post. When looking at the past few drafts, pick 100 was in the 3rd round. If I had to guess, the first pick of the 4th round will be around 105. Which would put the Saints around 110 if they were drafting based off of records today. Close enough to still say it's basically a top 100 pick, just providing data since I spent the few minutes looking earlier today

So what would Vele have to do to make the pick they gave up worth it being a “premium” pick? Again, not excited they gave up a fourth rounder for him but a fourth rounder isn’t premium in my eyes. A third rounder? Absolutely.

Such a bad trade.

Just like the free 7.75 mil they gave cooks.

Coach Moore talked about Tipton mostly when asked about replacing Cooks.

Last year’s number one pick in the 4th was 103.

We were at that spot before the Carolina win.

Our best player drafted in the last ten years was picked at 103.

Cam Skatebo was picked at 105.

Deone Walker looked pretty damn good against us earlier this year, picked at 109. Stutsman looks promising, picked 111. Riley also, even though he was much later in the 4th.

I bet giants fans would take a Vele for Skattebo trade right since 4th rounders aren’t valuable.

I see we took a detour through the cherry tree farm.
You identified a few 4th round picks that have showed promise, where was Skatt & Walker on the Saints draft boards? How have the other 4th rounders looked?

Please point to the part where I said 4th round picks have no value. My argument has been that it is not a "premium" pick. And while we are at it, we should point out that you have continued to bitch about the team throwing away a "top 100 pick", while now finally acknowledging that the pick will most likely be outside of the top 100 since the 4th round starts in the low 100s.

You'll enjoy this. I peaked at the history and saw Saldiveri was drafted at 103 in 2023 and was so confused at what you were trying to get at here.
I initially overlooked Hendrickson because when he was drafted at 103, it was in the 3rd round

His full season, 17 game pace is 11 catches 102 yards and 2 TDs. He 4x’d that last year in Denver and I suspect many hoped for him to at least match that at minimum. He will be 28 in December

Don’t care to argue the semantics of the value of the pick, I just know id rather the pick

That is terrible and I understand. Cooks is gone so he should see more targets. I am no excited they made the trade like I said previously but he can at least make it better or has a chance to since Cooks is gone. We shall see.

I’m not gonna get caught up with what word anybody is using.

Would I prefer Vele or the 4th round pick. I’m choosing the 4th.

Rookie year Vele > 4th round pick

What we got < 4th round pick.

He’s the best blocking WR on the active roster.

The catches will come once the running game becomes a true threat.

There’s plenty more besides the ones I named. Woody Marks is the main running back for the Texans, and has surpassed anything Miller has done so far. Dylan Sampson started earlier in the year. Malachi Moore is a starting safety. Jags traded Tank to give Tuten more carries. Barrett Carter is starting.

Riley is starting for us and playing well. Most of these guys will need a few years to develop. Vele is pretty much at his ceiling now.

If you have a good scouting dept, talent will be there in the 4th.
