It doesn’t matter that we have to clear some money before the season starts, at all.

What chu mean, “you people?”

We can get to between $65-85+ mil depending on if they included the carryover previously or not without cutting a single player (but does involve extending Jordan, Davis, and Olave, otherwise it would be close to $40-60 mil, again depending on the carryover).

Restructuring just pushes more money into the future.
Also, when you start the year at $100 mil over and can get to $20 under as we have done in the past, you start to realize that these numbers really mean nothing, and fans should stop crying about cap space like it actually matters to them (or really matters much at all). They know how to navigate better than any team in the league.
Literally one year where we got fricked with Galette after having made all our moves, and then last year with Carr's money accelerating after retiring. Every other year we have done as we wanted with regards to acquiring FAs (even the Galette year really, as FA was mostly done in July when he was cut).

I don’t think it’s the craziest idea to slow play this year a bit. What I’m saying by that is maybe wait until the later half of the rookie window before going balls to the wall in expensive acquisitions and continue to build the nucleus of the team through the draft.
We all love the idea of Shough being a franchise guy and building around him. He played very well given the crap around him. But maybe see how he adjusts to the league adjusting to him before we burn the warchest down. Way crazier shite has happened in the nfl than guys falling back to the pack after a promising run of games.
Obviously you address the guard spots, and fill out a few more skilled position players. We clearly have to give him the tools to progress.

It must matter somewhat, we lost alot of young talent over the years b/c we couldn’t afford them due to the cap. We had to overpay and give up a 4th for Vele just b/c his cap number was small. It matters whether you see it or not.

For sure. It just seems like people expect us to go into a season with that shiny $100mm free space number and it just isn’t realistic. They aren’t doing their jobs if the cap isn’t being manipulated
I don’t think they should be reckless but some reasonable contracts are definitely in play

Exactly what I think the smart play is this year. Sign a couple value based free agents and try and have another solid draft. Get all that dead money off the books for good. Two years left of Shough playing on a rookie deal.

I think you stomach paying what you have to on OL. We can’t have Shough getting clobbered every week again. Anything outside of that group does not need premium $. You get Shough some playmakers through the draft and maybe a RB in free agency if we don’t nab Love.

Finally paid off all that Brees money. As much as you people worship him. If he would have played at a discount he would have had at least 3x rings here.
That’s assuming that the refs will not frick us again.

They would be fools to go all in on free agency. This team needs to draft young talent and build it thr way they did in 2006. All of those drafts led us to a good run. Push some money forward, sign a good rb or guard, draft some offensive playmakers and wait till next year to splurge on a couple big free agents. Hate to break it to saints fans but we aren’t Super Bowl contenders next year. We’re playoff contenders and doing the same thing that got us in this mess is the definition of stupidity.

I rather just have a quiet free agency and then be set the next couple years.
The difference between this & other years is that the Saints are $150,629,709 under the cap for the 2027 season. That would rank 11th in the league currently.
1. Jets $204,559,132
5. Texans $183,084,112
11. Saints $150,629,709
16. Panthers $111,355,524
17.Bucs $109,649,651
21. Failcons $87,259,360
26. Bears $69,646,170
32. 49ers $9,930,016
So yes, you can be more aggressive than the past couple years as long as you're smart about it. You only have three more seasons until you are going to have to pay Shough.

Name the high priced free agent failures that got us into this “mess” (by mess I’m assuming you mean clear cap)
Our cap hasn’t been clean because of Marshon leaving, Mike Thomas being injured and Ram retiring primarily. All players that were no brainer signings at the time

Yeah. I agree with most of what you said.
I think if they play their cards right, it could be another 2005-6. Then have to wait a couple years before paydirt.
We will see if Loomis follows the same pattern

Yea. Get the best oline in the league as fast as you can.

Well yeah, just draft some guys equivalent to Reggie Bush, Roman Harper, Jahri Evans, Zach Strief and Marques Colston. Easy peasy

Yeah I think it’s one guard that we need and then a few rotational/depth guys. Last year the jags brought in a handful of new O linemen none of which were stars. They trusted the new staff to revamp the line with decent not blue chip talent and it worked out great for them.
I think we need to take a few interior linemen in the 2/3-5 rd range to then round out this line and possibly have McCoy replacement for the near future. It’s not likely that all 5 spots are high draft picks and/or big money guys. We have to turn some B/C level players into solid starters to maximize the roster.

Right idea, wrong execution. He should’ve retired but his ego couldn’t handle Brady hooking up with Sean and winning two titles. Sean would still be here and we’d still be relevant.

Nice try blaming Brees for this but it was Payton who whiffed on his can’t miss QB
Revisionist bullshite

I can’t believe someone on a Saints board is blaming Drew fricking Brees and his salary as to why we didn’t win more SB’s. You think you’ve heard the some dumb as shite takes and then someone cones along as says this.
