Saints acquire QB Teddy Bridgewater from Jets for 2019 third-round pick
Prior to Teddy Bridgewater's strong preseason, I discussed possible landing spots for Nick Foles in a trade, as Foles was the most prominent quarterback on the trading block. Two of the teams I mentioned most often were the Saints and Chargers. Both franchises have perennial Pro Bowl quarterbacks in the twilight of their careers, yet lacked successors for either.

New Orleans is such a logical landing spot for Teddy Bridgewater. He's great for the present because he gives the Saints a tremendous insurance policy in the event of a Drew Brees injury. He's even better for the future, as the Saints couldn't count on Taysom Hill replacing Brees in a couple of years, despite his outstanding performance in the third preseason game. Bridgewater is a starting-caliber quarterback, and he can learn from both Brees and Sean Payton. This will make him even better when he's asked to start in the future.

For the Jets, it's nice that they were able to acquire an asset for a signing they made in March. They didn't need Bridgewater at all, thanks to Sam Darnold's impressive summer, so they did well to unload Bridgewater.

We don't know the compensation yet, so I can't grade this trade yet. I just wanted to post my initial thoughts on this deal. I'll have an update when compensation is revealed.

Update: The compensation is a 2019 third-round pick. I think this an outstanding trade for both teams. I wouldn't have blamed if the Saints had surrendered a second AND a third for Bridgewater, as potential quality starting quarterbacks are worth way more than just a third-round choice. The Jets, meanwhile, are getting a free third-round selection, basically for nothing. I'm giving both teams an A+ for this transaction.

Grade for Saints - A+
Grade for Jets - A+

We got our talented, young starting QB for the future with a 3rd round pick...and we got creamed? Good lord

He's on a 1 year deal. You gonna force him to sign? Unless Brees retires he will walk. If Brees retires then he has all of the leverage and we're giving 5yrs/160 million to a guy with no knees and no starting experience in our system. Yikes.

This could be a situation where the Saints have signed back to back franchise QB's, no gap. wowza

I'd like to think the Saints plan on and feel confident that they can lock him up long term.

Unfortunately, we now have only one decent pick next year

We already got our QB of the future. A killer DE to pair with Jordan to anchor this defense for years.

I would have loved it if it was for a 4th rounder. Right now I just like it. We likely extend him for 2-3 years. I think it’s a bit over reaction to say because we made this deal that it assures it’s Brees’ last year. I think he plays out the contract.

If he plays out the contract that gives us two years of Bridgewater to see if he can be the guy. If we suck those years then 1 year we draft some defensive studs and the next year we draft a QB and let Teddy walk.

People need to realize that finding a QB post Brees is going to be frickING DIFFICULT.

We know for a fact Bridgewater can be a serviceable NFL QB. The hope is that under the best offensive coach in football over the past 15 years, he elevates to much more than serviceable. frick the draft pick. This is a gamble well worth taking.

Why would he not sign?
Who would you rather play for, as a struggling QB with huge potential?
The Pats maybe?
That's it.

3 is way, WAY too much. Unreal. We just got creamed. Pretty much guarantees this is Brees' last year.

I guess I'm in the minority unless there is a under the table deal in place a 3rd for a one year rent of a back up QB?

I'm starting to think this is Brees last year, especially if we win it all.

I think this is almost a certainty. We win it all, Brees is done. We come close, I think enough of our roster is still intact next year that he gives it one more shot. No way 3-4 more seasons.
