He is the defacto owner. He really doesn't have to answer hard questions to anyone. Benson let's him run both the Pelicans and Saints however he sees fit. That's a recipe for disaster. And both the Pelicans and Saints are proof of that. Not having a half way competent owner is really showing.

No you DumbAss !!
Cant you read ??
The Scouts and Head Coach evaluated and identified the player they wanted.
They decided they wanted the injured WR at Denver.
They brought this want- request to Loomis.
As GM, Loomis controls (has final say) on Contracts & Draft Picks as Compensation in a trade.
Loomis then contacted Denver and negotiated the trade… determining what draft picks they could give up and what draft picks they could not give up.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted
You are correct

I’m no Mickey Loomis fan, but we had maybe the best or one of the best rosters in the NFL for years. Won a Super Bowl and was in position to win multiple others.

CKM obviously believes this 6'5" guy can help him win the next three years(7th round contract)if not a couple more with a extension.
Loomis just filed the deal.

That's why the framing in op is correct. Why do we keep thinking that we are contenders? We're giving up valuable capital to then ultimately be wasted completely, as even if this moves the needle slightly. It won't do anything towards winning a title
The flipside of that argument is just how valuable is a 4th round pick compared to a guy who, at least for one season, has already proven he can produce in the NFL?
Teams aren't exactly loading up on All Pros in the 4th round. At best, teams are getting depth players in the 4th round...if their 4th round picks make the team at all. If he's ultimately a depth player who gives you 50 catches, 500 yards and 5 TDs this season I think most would say that would be pretty good value for a 4th round pick...a pick that had you kept it had no certainty whatsoever of being a great player, or even making the team.
There's two ways to look at it:
1. The Saints gave away a "lottery ticket" in the 2026 draft (i.e. that pick could have been a tremendous player....but history says probably not)
or
2. The Saints selected 1 year NFL player with their 2026 4th round pick.

Feel like you can’t frame it that simply.
Most 4th round WRs are good enough to post these very modest numbers over a 17 game season. That’s basically 3 catches and 30 yards a game. Thats an exceedingly low bar that most guys on an nfl roster are quite capable of these raw numbers in a vacuum. Especially if there aren’t a ton of other options around them.

Futhermore, Mickey looks at the division and realizes that the Saints aren't that far away. Argue all you want but the Falcons have question marks all up and down their roster with a rookie QB. Carolina has holes including a not to scary QB. Tampa is the only team that appears to have most of their act together. If we can somehow luck up on decent QB play it will be an interesting season.
The Saints aren't as bad as advertised. And the Head coach isn't the worst in the division either.

I agree with your take. I think we will most likely suck but it’s still true that an 8-9 record might win this division. The Falcons are the Falcons, the Panthers also suck and were fools gold at the end of last year IMO, and the Bucs are the most schizophrenic team in the league and have been for the entire Bowles/Baker tenure and have gotten bailed out by the other three teams in the division sucking.
None of this, however, changes the fact that Loomis is senile and needs to go.
