Preteens with smartphones is the worst.
Not a pretten story but I had to tip off a mother after my 14yo son told me he was concerned for a friend who just posted a topless profile pic to her FB.
Turned out she was going through a bout of depression/worthlessness and was plastering social media with the photos as a sort of sickening cry for help.

If I started a thread saying "I have terrible depression, please pray for me." I would get called a pussy and told to suck it up.
THIS times 1,000. It is because they haven't been through it. I had a friend that used to tell me to "suck it up" when I was going through a period of major panic attacks until six months later when he started having them and freaking out. He apologized and said man I never believed they were so horrible.

I had serious depression, a number of times. But never as a child. It makes me wonder, do these kids see and read about adult feelings and mirror them? Is depression at 12 a thing? At 12, you are rolling down the levee, playing outside, having fun while being financially supported. Is pre-teen depression a thing, or something learned from social media?

I think bullying has far deeper impacts than we imagine. I'm not sure if this poor girl was bullied, but it seems to be an "end of the world" feeling that some of these kids get when victimized by bullies.

People seem to think depression is brought upon by the person, that they "caused iT." There is depressions caused by actual chemical imbalances in the body.

Well frick me, who knew an opinion could be wrong???
If you don't think that some cases of depression can just be a faux cry for attention, then I dno what to tell you...
I never said ALL of them, as you will rarely find me speaking in absolutes

m happy for you that you beat your 'depression', but I can assure you, for many people it takes MUCH MUCH more than a 'kick in the arse'. Please don't patronize or trivialize such a dark thing that most people, including doctors and scientists, still don't fully understand
You cherry picked one line out of my post.. How did I patronize or trivialize all cases of depression?? I know it's real and I know the effects it can have on people.. I just think that a lot of cases of depression - especially in teens and preteens - aren't really clinical depression

Quit while you're behind.

Don't be a pussy - explain what you mean instead of just dropping insults and running

12 years old killing herself over a boy. Just sad. a whole life ahead. People need to realize rejection isn't permanent. Sadness fades.
There is a life to live. I just don't get giving up. So young too.

Young kids can't handle it when they try to have grown up emotions... could be a result of being exposed to things (relationships) she wasn't mentally ready for.. it's such a sad situation

TEEN SUICIDE RATE: Highest Increase in 15 years
quote:
A new CDC report shows the largest one-year increase in youth suicide rate in 15 years. Suicide rates for 10-19 year-old females and 15-19 year-old males increased significantly in 2004 in the United States. An increase in the suicide rates for three gender-age groups accounts for the increase in the overall suicide rate, the report said. Rates rose for 10- to-14-year-old females, 15 -to-19-year-old females and 15- to-19-year-old males from 2003 to 2004.

You are the only one acting like a pussy. You have being depressed confused with having clinical depression.

Not quite sure what you are saying here. Lack of English. I have dealt with depression several times, I am aware of what you are speaking of. I am curious though, people without the chemical imbalances, can they mirror depression through simple miming. Think copycat serial killers. Not the same mind frame, but want the same...fame?

FWIW I agree with your opinions on depression.

When I was in 5th grade and started at a new school, there was a girl on my bowling team (through PE) that was very friendly and outgoing. I had a positive perception of her but wasn't that close of friends.
When we were in 7th grade (i.e. around 12 years old), she attempted suicide and ended up missing the last few months of school. I think the teachers tried to keep it quiet but kids found out and the rumors spread.
I think we went to the same high school (big 5A school) but my last memory of her was in 7th grade. Fast forward 25 years and she sent a friend request on FB, immediately becoming the most entertaining of my friends with drama, white trash incidents, etc. She is now going through a divorce and her teenage kids are bashing her viciously on FB. It's a train wreck that is difficult to turn away from, especially given that I barely know this person.
All of that to say I could see her doing something like this when she was 12 if FB were around then.

I saw another article about it that said she had possibly been raped by her stepfather.
I think so many in this thread have too quickly forgotten what it is like to be 12-13. Anything bad seems like the end of the world. You sooo badly just want to be accepted and liked by others. Add on top of that sexual abuse as a child. You just aren't mature enough to have the coping skills to deal with things. And not enough life experience yet to realize the bad times pass and make way for better days.

Not really. Humans are an insane species with an insane, totally warped sense of what this life is all about.
