Yeah there was, NW corner. It was a K&B, which got bought by Rite Aid in the late 90s. The building was demolished by 2007 and replaced by a bank.

As the greatest sniper in the history of sniping, Kyle was his own spotter. One eye on the spotting scope, one eye on the sniper scope.

I’d like your thoughts, having been there:
I always thought it was disrespectful for that Chris Kyle claimed to shoot Louisianans from the roof. I also think he was lying.
Even if his targets were looting, he wasn’t operating under ROE. He would have been operating under SRUF, which would only allow him to kill Americans if they presented deadly force against him. That seems unlikely.

Thanks for your military service brother and sharing your experiences with TD. Most all of us who are from South LA (NOLA, Kenna-bra, Metry, the Best Bank) have Katrina stories and memories. Saturday before landfall, I went to the L9th Ward to pick up my then 85 yr old aunt who live 1 block from Holy Cross and the Industrial Canal on Jourdan Ave.
I went back 5 weeks later to assess the damage and miraculously her house survived and was still there on its foundation. She never moved back and lived at a nursing home in Kenner until she passed in 2011. What I'll always remember when returning back to the city, 1-6 months post Katrina was how eerily silent it was. No birds, no noises, no streetlights, no cars, no kids playing, just silence.

I simultaneously understand his actions (or his allegations) and your opinion regarding such actions (or allegations if he was indeed lying).
As far as the facts, I simply cannot corroborate anything he said.
Did NOPD officers come through in tactical gear on Wednesday after the storm saying they were told to take back the city? Absolutely. I knew some of them and they said it to me
Were federal assets part of such an effort? I don't know. There was a soft wall between state/local operations and federal troops. I never interacted directly with any federal forces for the entire 4-month period of my activation.

I have no experience with armed PMCs/PMSCs for Katrina.
ETA - Triple Canopy had Ugandan contractors for security at dining and MWR facilities in Iraq. We also had armed contractors do perimeter security in Kosovo. I don't recall the company. Nothing like that on the state side for Katrina.
Hope that wasn't too muddled.

Good to know. You can't always believe what's out there.

To be fair, the feds could have and likely did have some degree of armed contractor support, especially September and October. I just can't speak to it.

RIP News Orleans Center. That was a nice mall. Eddie Dibartolo developed it.

I remember driving through Hattiesburg that weekend and trees and power lines were leaning down over roads like a camo net in some areas.
It was low enough we could barely get our box truck through to the distribution center and had to turn around a couple times.

You know, I’ve never heard anything of LSU and Katrina.
I grew up in the Midwest (10 yo Dawg thought watching the videos on TWC was "fun!") but we lived in Orlando by 2001. The year before we had hurricanes drawing an X over us for 6 weeks. After Charley my company (we played a big part getting WTC impacted companies going again after 9/11) didn't screw around so we spent a lot of September commuting to California. Every time we came home there were more and more gasps on roofs. So I had some appreciation for what was going on.
I remember listening to the WWL on that Saturday night and hearing all of the warnings and evacuation reports. Waking up Monday had me racing to the gas station because my only experience was Charley's shortages. In hindsight of both events, I realize how trivial that gas run was.
Thanks for starting this thread. It's actually a really great companion to the NatGeo Katrina series they're running this afternoon. I didn't know about the history of Betsy and the levees. Government not having their shite together was almost as harmful as the weather event itself.

I worked night shift in that command tent answering land lines for people requesting rescue. I didn’t get to the Dome until after we escorted school buses full of St Bernard refugees to the weigh station in Laplace. Almost had 2 gun fight with JPSO. We were armed with M-16’s and 2 30 round magazines. It wouldn’t have been a good day for either of us. Slept in heliport/parking garage getting misted by that shite water below every time a blade cranked up. I deployed to Afghanistan twice and Katrina way 100 times worse.
