I had a guy tell me one time that the "Cloud" was going to put Equinix IBXs out of business.....I pretty much knew I was done talking to him at that point.

Where’d you get this map from. There is a runs of fiber from Louisiana fo several of the deepwater structures. One that I wok on is 100 miles out and has a fiber connection back to land. Better connectivity and speed than many offices I’ve been in. All are privately owned (like Shell or BP) and seek access to other operators like Chevron.

Believe it or not I actually managed a few of these projects from the engineering side.

S.FL to Uruguay (with many landings in between)
S. FL to St. Maarten (with a few landings in between)

There is no reason to run extra cable through the gulf, both east and west sides of our continent are connected to the global network.

I bet the darker colored cables have faster speeds than the lighter ones

Great latency. Poor bandwidth.

There are underwater fiber optic cables in GOM to serve the platforms. BP laid lines about 10 yrs ago and sells bandwidth / tie-in to other E&P.

my somewhat educated guess is because of oil and gas pipelines that run all through the gulf.

I used to work for a company that handled telecommunication in the Gulf. They tried a huge capital project in the early 00's to lay fiber down. Long story short is the company contracted out to do the actual cable-laying didn't do it properly, and the cable floated up from the floor & got chopped up by boat propellers.

EDIT: I see tiger09's post. We were originally working with one of the oil companies on the project before the incident. Might of been BP, but I can't remember.
