Thanks. I just saw that.
They were LSU students. Why not go the extra mile and suspend all activities for all students other than classes? This is a terrible situation. Those involved need to suffer severe consequences. But LSU administration is going to LSU administration

Are those members not suspended indefinitely too?
Probably not. Unless things have changed recently, the black fraternities at LSU have almost zero connection with the university. They don't have a house on campus, they don't participate in rush, I don't think they are even members of the council.
If they were more closely associated with the university, they would've been shut down long ago for branding their members.

My son is a pledge right now, haven't talked to him about this yet

Few reasons:
1) The houses are usually on campus property owed by the school
2) Nationals of each fraternity are very touchy with their branches
3) If the university sees any reason they dont want the fraternities there, they can use the rules to enforce it since they own the land
4) The groups are associated with the campus
5) A number of complicated mixings of above.
But why do the members of a fraternity want necessarily to have a house on campus, aside from it being a close location to classes and campus events?
I assume that when you say "Nationals of each fraternity are very touchy with their branches," you mean that the national organization wants the individual branches to have an official association with the university. Why, though?
Maybe I miss the point of fraternities because I never quite understood what they do besides just being a social club. The last thing I'd want if I were in a social club as a college student would be to give the university some level of power over the club.

Ahh, okay, that makes sense.

Are the black frats also suspended?

And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, F. King - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?

or anywhere, were the most extreme about hazing when I was in college, didn't see too many other frats taking a branding iron to pledges

Don't be a dick. I'm genuinely asking if there's some reason to have a house on campus aside from close proximity to classes/campus events. Especially since during my time at LSU I lived off campus but still within walking distance to everything I wanted to be at on campus. It doesn't seem outside of the realm of possibility to build a fraternity house off of official campus property but still within walking distance to classes and events.

don't know what it's like now, but when I was there, the frats were a part of everything on campus, not just a big animal house, go through the annual and go from cover to cover, we had reps in just about everything, every year, the house was a great staging point, as big as it was, really not many people lived there

If a band member died from hazing I've got a hard time believing that LSU wouldn't come down hard on the band.
Not all LSU fraternities are equal. As hard as it is for many to believe, several of them actually do emphasize hard work and personal growth while taking active measures to prevent hazing.
