The doctor told me it is caused by not having a bad enough case of the chicken pox in my youth. Basically, the pox stays in your spine and emerges later in life.
Mine started on the top of my right leg and moved into my hip and lower back. I could barely walk for a week.

Thank you sir. I guess I'm glad to hear its fairly common. Ofcourse I won't be going to the bar bragging about it.

Just got over a case, go to your dr ASAP and get on an anti viral such as valtrex, the sooner you start the better it is, go to an after hours clinic today. Every case is different, from mild to severe. Mine was not too bad , it had its moments and a few days were pretty miserable but did not take any pain meds. My biggest problem was not the rash but the nerve pain on my stomach and leg (rash was on butt).

FOr a couple years after i had mine I still would get a little tingling on my forehead every once in a while as the nerves came back to life. So weird.

I had it in high school on my face and head, right side only

you can also take herbs and do it naturally, without side effects
your choice
american sasparilla, as a wash or poultice
lemon balm, applied right on skin
red pepper balms, on skin to relieve pain
chinese angelica, for skin eruptions
licorice tea, drink or make poultice for skin
somebody may find it interesting

Had it from my lower back wrapping around to my inner thigh amd scrotum. Not fun. Initially thought it was something else and used a "home remedy" that involved putting bleach on it. Less fun.

That's fine but your still gonna need an anti-viral medication...home remedies will only help so much.

By the time I got a correct diagnosis, it was too late for meds. Took me two full weeks to get over it.
Mine presented in my scalp, and the pain was beyond anything I've ever experienced. My hair hurt. Not kidding. Just touching my hair was excruciating.
You've got my sympathy. Hope it goes away quickly.

Same here. Was on the lower back side of my scalp going down to top of my neck. It hurt so bad I couldn't stand to lay my head on a pillow. And this is while I was receiving pain meds for chronic lumbar disc pain. I can't imagine it without the pain meds. The doc did give me some liquid steroid meds to put on them.
This was during a period of high stress and low immune system, which is what allows the chicken pox virus that stays in your system forever to represent as shingles. Typically its in older people, but I was in my 20s.
I've had broken bones, herniated discs, punctured lungs, been stabbed, etc., and shingles was one of the most painful things I've ever dealt with.

Shingles are no joke
I remember when Tony Larussa had it, and people were laughing at his face being all fricked up.
Had a friend(37) get it, and he said the pain was unbearable. Was on his back, to lower leg.

chinese angelica side effects -
- extra-sensitive to the sun. greater risk for skin cancer
- contains chemicals that are considered to be cancer-causing (carcinogens)
- slow blood clotting
- act like estrogen
Licorice Tea -
- can raise blood pressure
- increase the risk of irregular heartbeat
- act like estrogen in the body
- cause the level of potassium to drop in the blood
- erectile dysfunction (ED) by lowering levels of a hormone called testosterone
Complementary and alternative medicines are not without side effects. And, that is assuming you aren't getting saw dust in your preparations.

Had a line wrapped around my left hip about 4 years ago. Thought it was some kind of skin infection I picked up from the gym so I put Lotrimin on it and ignored it. It eventually got so bad that my boss realized something was wrong with me and told me not to come to work again without seeing a doctor. By then it was on its way out anyway. Whole process took about two weeks.

If you've had chicken pox, you'll most likely get shingles, or herpes zoster.

Had it on my lower back / flank about 20 years ago. Antivirals and pain meds helped some. Even a light breeze across it hurt.

I had it a couple of years ago on my stomach. My wife was convinced it was poison ivy. I finally had it diagnosed which I had pretty well figured out. Lasted about 2 weeks and left scars but they've diminished over time. I asked the nurse/PA at work about getting the vaccine to help with recurrences but she said it wouldn't it was too late.

I had them back in April. The pain wasn't as intense as the itching was for me, but I'm only 34. I had to keep a towel folded under the edge of my bra to keep it from rubbing against it, which probably looked stupid, but when it's hurting, you won't give a rats arse how it looks.
