We visited in 2017 and hung out mostly either in the north loop or Uptown near the lake. We did venture to the main downtown area and it was pretty gross and dingy around there.
North Loop and Uptown were very nice though.

one of my college buddies moved there 10+ years ago and he loves it. He's pretty right wing, hunts/fishes, etc. When I asked him about the somalis he just said yeah, there are a lot of them.

I go once a month on average for work
The surrounding areas are beautiful. The people there are actually extremely nice . Downtown has some rough areas and nicer areas
Yes there are a ton of Somalis, every uber I take is one. I enjoy going there but don’t really feel the “turmoil” when there that the news portrays
I feel far more of a minority presence in Nola, BR, ATl, biringham etc than I do in Minneapolis
ETA: looked it up. Minneapolis is 58% white. I’d say that’s more than almost all major cities in the Deep South. I’m telling you as a southerner you don’t feel that it’s overrun with Somalis considering what we are used to here

Doesn't count as living there, but I was on a long term project there twice along with probably a dozen other business trips that I've had to make there over the years.
First stint: Before the pandemic - 2015-2016 I was in Inver Grove Heights, but frequently went to downtown Minneapolis. It was pretty badass back then. Lots of bars and restaurants; mostly very safe, if a little crowded. But the people were very strange. All neighborhoods I was in seemed very clean.
I learned what "Minnesota Nice" meant and it made me miss my projects in other parts of the US.
Tried Somolian food once and never again.
Shocked at how small the Mississippi River is there.....
After the pandemic - around 2022, I was bouncing between Minneapolis and Baton Rouge; in MSP I was staying downtown and commuting to the north side of the city. It was shockingly worse than before the pandemic; perhaps the most rapid/steepest decline of any major city I've seen (even worse than San Francisco). Downtown had "for lease" signs everywhere. If there wasn't a Twins game downtown, that whole area was a ghost town by 5:00PM and not much busier at high noon. Target's HQ had still not gone back to work in person, and many hotels and restaurants had closed downtown. The whole area was creepy, and I didn't walk around very much at night. There was garbage and graffiti in a lot of places - that also was a major change from my observation 7 years earlier.
I noticed I couldn't get cabs downtown after the pandemic; and would have to book ubers 12 hours in advance. Nobody went downtown anymore. The place I stayed was a historic old bank tower that was converted into a mixed use of residents and a fantastic hotel but it was almost empty. Great restaurant in the lobby of the former bank building that I noticed was permanently closed when I had to go back to downtown Minneapolis on business in 2024.
Also - it snowed there IN frickING MAY in both 2016 and 2022. That just isn't right.
Another weird pattern I noticed there. The labor pool in Minnesota is very much a "word harder, not smarter" kind of place. They stick to their lane and put in a lot of hours even if it's a ridiculous and foolish method. Sort of like Detroit or Grand Rapids but amplified. Not saying that's bad, but it's not very collaborative and teamwork isn't something that can be expected from them without a lot of pushing. I'm not sure why but I've noticed it with multiple clients in different industries in the MSP area.
TBH I think Minnesota is the strangest part of the country. It's our version of Toronto, but colder. Even weirder than California and in a very bad way. Those nordic types are passive assholes that pretend to be nice. That, combined with the bitterly cold winters, would make it a miserable place to me. They don't even seem to like each other very much. They very much hated a guy from Chicago (or Baton Rouge) being there either.
I'd choose Chicago over Minneapolis every day of the week and twice on Sunday if I had to pick a big city in the upper midwest to move to. Minneapolis is probably much more affordable, but it's far worse quality.

A couple of more observations: That "Minnesota Nice" doesn't hold up if they disagree with you politically. They can be some of the nastiest creatures on the face of the earth (and try to run you down with their car!).
The cuisine sucks. Even though they have fish fries all over the Twin Cities on Fridays in Lent, I only found one place that served fried catfish. The rest offered cod or some other yankee fish.
Although I kept my political leanings to myself for fear of being ostracized, I let my sports bias show proudly. One of the greatest moments was when the Saints won the Super Bowl. i proudly displayed a Saints flag at my desk, much to the dismay of the supporters of the four-time SB loser Vikings fans.

I can't see how any sane person would want to live there, but I guess if that is where your job is....

I spent some time there. About 17 Fortune 500 companies are based there. Some good job opportunities

Lived in St. Paul for 16 years. Only went there because the job offer was too good. They have to pay a premium for you to live in that frozen wasteland for 6 months of the year.

Imagine my surprise moving to South Carolina and making friends my age who are conservative or libertarian. After twenty years in Chicago I just automatically assumed anyone under fifty was a raging progressive.
Was at the driving range my first year here and some college kids were there. One of the guys had a Trump head cover that said “Yuuuuggge Drive “ and I smiled and thought to myself “There might be some hope for the next generation”, also “I’ve found my people”

My wife (no pics) is from White Bear Lake. Her family still lives there. Was up there at Christmas. I lived in Golden Valley for about 3 years around 2000. Moved from BR to MPLS. I loved it up there. Lots of Somali's and Hmongs there then, not as many as now. But it was never an issue.

I visited once. It was cold and the coffee was garbage.
Somehow they can make killer biscuits and sausage gravy.
