Husky's...

Classified as a working breed due to their sled dog thing...

Little known fact is they were originally bred by nomadic tribes to keep their kids entertained and warm at night.

And this is why this breed is often black listed by apartements. they are subject to separation anxiety due to their primary breeding and have been known to wreck a home/apartment for that reason.

Contrary to what has been posted previously, they are not "aggressive" dogs... so if you looking for a "guard" dog.. look elsewhere..

They can be very tenacious/stubborn.. As a sled dog that works in their favor... In other settings not so much.. Discipline usually requires a firm (not harsh) and consistent approach especially with the males.

Husky's generally weigh in at anywhere from 40 to maybe 60 lbs depending on if their Male or Female...

VERY smart, very protective, and very sweet at the same time.

But they need cooler weather, lots of room to burn energy, and they shed really really bad.

All of this has been my experience.

My parents had a 2 year old husky when I was born. She was stupid sweet and was practically my babysitter. She never let me out of her sight and never got rough with me. She must have been extremely well trained because she never ran when we let her outside off the leash. But, we lived in Maryland, had a massive backyard to get that energy out, and the weather was much more suitable for a husky than south Louisiana weather so we checked off those boxes. I had many fun snow days with her pulling me around on my sled by a rope

I have 2 Australian shepherds now and there's a saying that goes something like "a worn out Aussie is a well behaved Aussie" and I'd imagine that holds true for huskies as well.

We got out first huskey last February as a 8 week old. Then covid happen. So he grew up thinking the family is home all the time. Needless to say he had some issues once we started leaving him. Had to put up an electric fence b/c he was escaping. Not a big deal if you ask me. It’s what any puppy would do in that situation. I can let him out in the front yard and keep him there now, as he listens well to me, not so much anyone else. I think the issue with Huskies is that they have a strong desire to be the alpha, and you really really need to establish that you are the alpha with them.

As others have said they are terrible guard dogs. Sure they look mean b/c they look like a wolf, but ours is as friendly as they get. He will literally run up to any human excited to see them. Still working on the jumping, but he will jump on anyone and try to kiss them.

You can definitely tell he is on another level of smarts from other dogs. He is incredibly cunning. He had caught a bird and I was trying to get it out his mouth and I literally couldn’t catch him in my backyard. He’d get behind a table and continue to keep the table between me and him, and you can tell he is enjoying it.
And just simple things like when I walk him and he goes around a pole or something, he untangles himself immediately. He recognizes what happened and fixes it, where as most dogs you literally have to drag them around the pole b/c them going backwards to untangle themself is incomprehensible.

We have another dog that he gets to run outside with so he gets his energy out, but yes he has energy for days, especially with the cool weather. I think it’s essential to have another dog so they can play together and burn energy.

And yes the shedding is out of this world.

I have two Huskies. I've had them for over eight years now. I've lived in Charleston, SC, Washington DC and Baton Rouge with them. While they loved the snow up in DC they do fine with it down here.

Yes, they are full of energy and they love to run. One of mine has a good recall and won't run away but I feel bad for her because before I got her she was abused and feared men. So she is super submissive when people raise there voices. The other got off leash and took me on a mile and half run through DC only to stop at the doorstep of a church. (Smart Dog)

The shedding is crazy. I vacuum and sweep twice daily to keep up. Its bad year-round.

Huskies are loud players and their play can be misconstrued for fighting.

I wouldn't trade them for any other breed though. They have amazing personalities and are awesome with my son even when he gets too rough with them.

The only other dogs they don't care for are small dogs that bark a lot but I guess they've adapted that part of my personality.

They require a lot of attention and activity. Also, they tend to have a lot of separation anxiety. With that said, they are playful and loving dogs.

I love mine.

They are very popular because a Husky was featured in the Game of Thrones and dumb people who watch that garbage went out and bought one. Now they are abandoning them since they are high energy dogs.

A TV show where the 1st episode has a child being thrown out of a window to his death because he saw a brother and sister having sex is a garbage tv show.

what the hell are you talking about? There's a big difference between a wolf and a huskey, and they used actual wolves that were trained on the set, not huskey's. Those wolves can be 3 times bigger than a huskey.

A) It’s spelled Husky.
B) just Google Husky Game of Thrones. Dozens of articles about how garbage humans are buying them b/c of the show and eventually abandoning them.

Ok

Tell us how you really feel

I’m not even a fan of the show. Just weird to have such a strong opinion about a tv show.

A buddy I grew up with who lives in the sticks always had huskies since we were kids and both dogs were awesome. They were always running through the woods hunting and bringing back rabbits and what not. They would shave them for summer and they slept/stayed in the house a lot as well. Awesome dogs. Where is this anti husky stuff? Because of heat or something?

I imagine they did not know but shaving them is not a good idea. They can sunburn easily and their coat helps keep them cool in the summer. Also often times it will not grow back properly.

We have one living with us now (our son's dog). Incredibly annoying breed with all the talking...very needy and they won't stfu until you give them what they want. She's digging huge holes in my yard, sheds like hell, doesn't hesitate to bite (though we're breaking her of that) and doesn't seem especially bright. I wouldn't purchase one. I like the dog because I like dogs and I've gotten to know her, but she's definitely a pain in the arse that I wouldn't want to deal with for 10 years or however long they live.

My wife (no pics) had a husky when we started our relationship. The first time I met the dog it walked to the middle of her living room, looked me in the eye, and took a giant deuce on the floor. It was from that point I knew I wasn’t dealing with a regular goofy dog. Now, several years later the husky is a mostly good and obedient dog but still has her moments. Oh, and never let them off a leash unless you have a couple of hours to catch them...
