I’m Technical sales support in production of oil and gas. I create designs, package quotes, and create value propositions for our US sales.

There are salesmen and then you have order takers. Salesmen go out and look for opportunities while order takers just answer emails and supply the customer with what they want. Order takers are the worst as they meet a quota and do the bare minimum and somehow stay employed.

How would my interaction with other salespeople be different as a woman? As in you think my male counterparts treat me with authenticity and kindness but not others? Other sales professionals I’ve been fortunate enough to work with are amazing people. Not all of them; but I would say 75% of those I’ve worked with are really good people.

By the way, my femaleness doesn’t help get me in the door with other females, I know that for a fact :) I doubt it hurts with my male surgeons but they’re really only talking to me because I have something that helps them. If I didn’t, I would get the door slammed.

What's humorous is that you seem to think your experience is analogous to other females in sales. While I have no reason to doubt your competency, to think that gender and physical appearance and appeal don't matter in sales-ESPECIALLY Pharma Sales-then you're being silly.

I know a rep here locally that is #2 in the America at what he does. I know what goes on at their sales conferences and retreats, and I know what goes on with a multitude of women in pharma sales...much less medical equipment sales.

Hell, look back at the old Cox Sports, "Behind the Scenes: Saintsations Calender Photo Shoot Special," on Cox Cable Channel 37.

Each segment featuring each Saintsation began almost the exact same way:

"Hey y'all....My name is Ainsley/Brandi/Jeanne...I'm 26 yeahs owuuhld...Um frum Gretnuh...It's my 3rd yeah as a Saintsashun...I got my Associate's Duhgreee from Delgahwdoh...I took dayunce for twenny-too yeahs...and I currently work in Faurmasuitical Sayuhls in thuh Nuholins hreah and hayuhv fuh dah past three yeahs."

I feel like Dickie V on Jordy's show...only it really is the truth when I say, "CHECK THE TAPES!"

Sex sells. It has always and will always sell.

I realize this thread is four years old, and i havent read thru to see if i already posted a few years back- but ive been in sales for pretty much my whole career, and IMO it all comes down to what youre selling.. ive sold some amazing products that in some cases almost sold themselves.. and ive sold inferior products; that’s when you need to be a little dead inside in order to make it work.. ultimately had to get out of sales though due to the unending roller coaster of up and down quarters .

I was a earthmoving equipment product support sales rep for almost 15 years before moving into product support management. I enjoyed it and found it rewarding in that I was helping people solve their problems and get greater value from their equipment, which was what put food on their table and shoes on their children’s feet.

Now in my management role I’m still helping people. But now my role is to give guidance and help the next generation of PSSRs learn how to be successful. I find this role even more rewarding than being a rep myself.

I don’t sell anything. I negotiate price with people wanting to buy :)

Bingo.

I tried outside sales a few times as I am legit a people person, but you have to be such a phony.

Sales is for people who wanted to be actors.

I have been in sales for 40 years because I drank and played intramurals for 5 1/2 years of college before getting a social promotion. Having no discernible skills, my only option was sales. I read "Death of a Salesman" at least once a year to be reminded of my fate.

On the plus side, I am actually managed to become affluent, but I guess two people working and saving for 40 years at any career should accomplish that in most cases.

I recommend that everyone try outside sales, retail, and food service. The world would be a lot nicer.

I totally agree. I've done all 3 during and right after college. If I was ever in a true bind I could go back to food service or retail, but not outside sales. I was terrible at it.

I know a guy "in sales" although i dont' know wtf he sells, somethign with technology or something. That guy gets to travel all over, play fancy golf courses, take clients to vegas, it really seems like the guy is just paid to party professionally with potential clients and get paid 6 figures for it. I can assure you he isnt' dead inside.

That is our Business Development team. That is extremely tough to get into for my industry. You need the technical background, sales approach and know all the regulations plus have the the personality for it. Our BD people usually get filled from program management (the ones with more personality).

They also are highly trained. Your friend earned his position

I’ve been in sales my entire working career (farm equipment, machinery). The first ten years or so were brutal. I was given a poor territory that was basically locked-up. After reassignment and breaking through, it became more client management and upkeep as opposed to new sales. Much more manageable.

The worst part of the job was the constant travel and nights at hotels. I don’t miss that one bit.

However, the stuff I was selling was to honest, hard working people and companies. I’ve also been on some incredible hunting outings in Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.

I own an online sales business and it's customers calling or emailing parts requests. I give them best quotes I can offer including ship costs. It's a no nonsense approach really. No fake smiles thru online or phone and zero fake happy voice. Just the facts. Earth movers are no nonsense people and they don't want bs.

If I can't sell to them I offer alternatives, if any, that I can. That's just a goodwill service to help dirtworks dudes best I can.

So Roger, not every salesman is phony or dead inside.

You have to be either an OT9 or a legit sociopath to really make it in sales.

This is dumb. Most people that make 1% wages in sales are selling to businesses, which means selling shite to people who are using someone else’s money to buy it. I know several ugly old men that have made many millions of dollars selling tech to companies, and they’re some of the nicest guys you’ll meet. Nothing sociopathic about taking money off these large corporations.

If you have to be “convinced” to help people, you’d never be a good product support rep.
