If you pass more than 2 cars you are not pacing traffic and zipper merging correctly.

Sounds like you’re advocating for the early merge and not the zipper merge.

Drivers should use all available open lane space, and then actually zipper merge.

No half the time it’s past where the dotted middle ends, and then zero right to cut off the person like the jackass thinks he has right of way.

How the hell are you passing people if you merged early?

No, you are matching the pace of the traffic in the lane you are merging into. If you are matching the pace you aren't passing anyone.

No traffic is being blocked jackass. It’s called merging very slowly while in standing traffic

You responded to:

People block zipper merge traffic here

Where I live, truck douches do this by occupying both lanes to prevent people from approaching the zipper, creating more traffic and announcing uberdouche status. Blocking zipper merging requires blocking traffic. You dumbass.

. Trying to “zipper” too soon, which isn’t zippering at all, is what holds up traffic the most.

When the were working on the hale Boggs bridge this was pretty regular. I will pass the people on the shoulder with fingers in the air. They should be ticketed.

Always find the weak one and merge in front of them, (18 wheeler, grandma, idiot looking st their phone). I'll be damn if I'm waiting 10 plus cars deep to exit.

I sit in traffic nearly every day leaving work and when I pull onto the highway I am already in the exit lane I need to be in to exit onto the interstate, so I get the pleasure of starting off in the back of the line while people already on the highway attempt to merge. I leave space in front of me, often times very ample space, for vehicles to merge in, but of course they would be at the rear of the traffic backup to do so. I would say more than half prefer to pass on my available space and proceed all the way up the front of the line where they can minimize their time in the slow moving traffic.

Zipper merge is like Communism, it works in theory only. In real human application, it gets blown the frick up by the nature of humanity. If you think about how many fricking dumbasses and selfish assholes you encounter online and in real life out and about, consider that all these people are out there on the road driving and it starts to make sense why we can't have nice things.

Those who have seen the signs for a mile that the left lane is closed and push up the left lane instead of zipper merging ASAP can eat shite and die.

Those signs are telling you to merge in a mile, not merge now

The problem is people trying to jump in last minute, causing stoppage. If everyone begins when they see the signs, and maintains a steady speed, it would be smooth.

If you got over so early that you added 10 minutes of waiting time instead of using all available road space and zipper merging, that's your fault. fricking midwit.
This. People who notice the sign that says “lane ends 1 mile” and immediately get over rather than using the remaining road then getting over are the ones causing unnecessary traffic

Learn how to zipper merge.

I think more and more are starting to buy in to the concept. When it first started and for a long time afterward, people in the active lane thought they were being screwed by the merging lane cutting the line and intentionally closed in the gaps. This is what causes stop and go traffic.

Now I am seeing more and more people having no issue with the merging car "cutting" the line several cars ahead of them, when the same guy merging could have stopped right at the exit and backed up both the exiting highway and thus the active lanes, just so they can be at the back of the line.

A good zipper merge are the active lanes flowing with space allowed in front of them, and being ok with the merging lane cutting in front of you or several cars ahead, and recognizing it proves to be a much faster process in traffic flow by letting that happen.
