Fun fact, Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation, and has for many years.

This comparison has MI at $500 cheaper than LA for full coverage. carinsurance.com

Mine went down as well but it had increased a couple of times with no wrecks, tickets or claims

I pay more for insurance now on a 2013 Silverado than I did when it was brand new. And that’s with no tickets and claims. Insurance is the biggest scam there is. But knowing my luck, if I dropped it, I’d hit a deer tomorrow.

I'm about to add a 16 y/o son to policy with another vehicle. The increase in policy was nearly double to add a truck similar to yours vs a brand new decked out truck.

Before any comments the brand new decked out truck would be for me not the 16 y/o. He'll get a hand me down

From my observation working in the insurance industry for so long, the frivolous payouts usually happen without a jury so without knowing anything else about that particular case, I lean towards the man deserving much of that $19M award if a jury awarded it. It must've been a serious injury resulting from egregious negligence on the part of the other driver. In my opinion, EVERY personal injury claim in this state should automatically go to a jury.

All of this.

Been in Michigan for the holidays, and it has been a really nice break from the personal injury attorney commercials.

Mine renews in January. It didn’t go down as much, but State Farm lowered mine by about 8%.

I keep expecting mine to increase. I am paying $115/month for full coverage. My car probably only worth $17k though

Insurance isn’t a savings account where you’re supposed to get back what you paid in. It’s how you mitigate the risk of a sudden unexpected financial hardship, like having to repair or replace a damaged vehicle, or owing a ton of money for medical treatment to someone you hit.

If you want to take on that risk yourself, just pay cash for your vehicle and self-insure. La RS 32:861(c) lets you deposit with the state treasurer the $55k equal to the minimum $25k property damage and $30k per accident required of auto policies.

Louisiana insurance is ridiculous across the board. Chalk up another reason to consider leaving that state.

yes. It’s common knowledge that the biggest factor when insuring a 10-year-old truck is the possibility that you get sued by your own passenger after an accident. If he had a blind spot sensor, that risk would obviously be way lower.

Imagine thinking that modern safety features DONT contribute to less accidents lol

This is any insurance company. Newer cars cost less to insure due to advanced safety features.

It’s embarrassing that they just reversed their own decision they just made in late June.

Lol. You brought up some dumb scenario to prove that new safety features aren’t a factor in lower insurance rates

Dumb to do this. The cost of defense when you get sued is high. I would have insurance just for the sole purpose of defense costs. The coverage limits are secondary.

I brought up a dumb scenario because the guy used a dumb justification for the insurance rates being high on a 2013 truck. He said:
quote:

A 2013 doesn’t have the safety features new vehicles have so if you are in an accident, you’re more likely to be seriously injured. That cost insurance companies much more that replacing the vehicle.

1. Your liability insurance rate is not being driven up because of the risk that you are injured in an accident. It’s being driven up by the risk that someone else is injured in an accident, hence my reference to being sued by your own passenger.

2. Safety features aren’t that drastically different in a new Silverado than a 2013 Silverado. The most prominent “new” safety features since that time are things like blind spot sensors and lane departure warnings (although my 2015 has both, so I’m not even sure those count), hence my reference to blind spot sensors.

In other word, the “dumb scenario” I brought up is exactly the type of specific scenario that would have to apply under the other poster’s justification.

ETA: I am not contending that safety features are meaningless. I’m contending that the guy who talked about your risk of injury in an accident doesn’t know wtf he’s talking about.

I dunno. It wasn't like it wasn't known or easily discoverable how his family made its money. La elected a fox to watch the hen house and is shocked...SHOCKED! when chickens go missing. We will continue to get this treatment b/c the state willingly chooses it.
