All that matters is how the tires perform in real life.

What name brand tires are prone to blowouts?

have great lateral stability
what kind of engineering went into a Michelin tire with the design of the sidewall to provide a greater lateral stability than any other brand of tire?

Hop on the Tirerack website and look at the best rated tires that fit the size and category you want. That should help you narrow it down to a few choices. Then perhaps read some specific reviews on each.
Some brands may be better than others depending on the category/type of tire.

I've put 3 sets of Coopers on a couple of cars, and they have been good. I also like the Cooper dealer, which is very quick and professional.

Not an expert, but I put a set of Yokohamas on my Toyota. Got good mileage out of them and they rode great. Affordable too.
Also, check tire shops. Allied here in Baton Rouge will do a rebate deal where they pass it on to the customer. Pretty much by 3 and get 1 free kinda deal. Unsure of which brands it affects but typically do it in the first part of the new year.

So, seeing dozens of vehicles ,up on car lifts, all with one problem or another and seeing wear patterns and doing alignments is not as good as driving your own vehicle?

Continental seems to make a solid tire with good tread life and ratings for a more affordable price.
I just purchased a set of Continentals for my vehicle. Consumer reports rated them high in their category. The ride on these tires is ridiculously smooth. I'd have no problem going back and getting more Continentals next time I'm in the market.

I like to research on Tire Rack (and usually buy locally, not through Tire Rack). I personally put a lot of weight on the Wet Traction and Hydroplaning Resistance evaluations.

Looking at the results, I'm thinking the Michelin Premier A/S or the Khumo Solus TA71.
2 more questions:
1. Has anyone ever owned Khumo Solus TZ 71's?
2. What does Low Rolling Resistance mean?

My truck? Firestone Destination A/T. For the win.
I ran those on my truck for a long time, good A/T. Bought new tires about 2 months ago and was comparing the firestone destination M/T and the Nitto Trail Grappler M/T. Same cost, but ended up going with the Nitto's because they were rated better on for some highway driving. I need a tire that I can go through mud and also ride decently down the highway sometimes.

Had both Michelin & Bridgestone's on my Tahoe and was pleased with both. Of course the Michelins were a bit quieter and channeled water somewhat better, but the large increase in price is what steered me away from a second set. The Bridgestone's were the next best choice imo.
