My Marathon JSAR is in for service. They are changing the movement, the case, the dial, the hands, the crystal and the bezel.

Tell me more. I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on a Marathon after seeing a new model they displayed at SHOT. But not if they are a problem. I was under the impression they had a pretty good reputation.

Marathon

I have one that is probably 20 years old.

It does currently need service, but I wore it always and treated it to hard times.

I hope the new ones are just as good.

I'd like to see a Rolex or Omega stand up to shop work, vibration, and grease

The x33 is a great watch. But........ keeping that movement stocked for the next 50 years is going to be an issue. Breitling is finding this out with the Pluton

Mine is 20 years old and the pip fell out. It's been updated with a new movement and case. They are rock solid. Would recommend. They are thick as hell too. Just fyi

Well, I will say I went through i think 3 bezel inserts in 12 years.

Eta: and I repainted the original 4 or 5 times just to limp it along.

Im saving my nickels now and next promotion I get, I'm getting a CSAR

I saw an older (probably 90’s) Breguet in the wild the other day. Two tone on an older woman. I think it was a Breguet Marine.

I thought it looked nice then saw the blue second hand not ticking.

Not suprising most tend not to know watches very well. If a professional or even an amateur watchmaker is fooled, they should throw their tools out.

the movement is even the same and so are the inside parts.

I will make the 100% real offer I make to anyone who makes these claims. Bring any number of Rolex and fakes you want to my home, their must be at least 25% or more real Rolexes in the group. We can go back to my watchmaking bench, and I will identify each movement as fake or real within 15 seconds of having the case back off, not using my microscope or loups just with my unaided eyes. I will be 100% correct and If I am not I will pay you full Rolex retail for every fake and if I am 100% you gove me all the Rolexes and we go out to the garage and I will smash the fakes.

If you have frankens in the group I will need more time and if I am not allowed to open the casebacks I will need more time still. Hell, if you tell me the reference, I can be ~90% accurate blindfolded.

There is an entire business model built around scaring the shite out of people, and they should be mindful but they all have multiple flaws not because a counterfeit can't be made to fool people with actual knowledge, but it just isn't economically feasible. This isn't just the Chinese either it is pampant in watches period. There are a whole plethora of issues with the 6265 "Unicorn" that sold for almost $6 million back in IIRC 2017. I think there is a better than 50% chance it is a franken.

Honestly, on the wrist I and anyone can be fooled, but I honestly don't care about that only if I or someone I know is a potential buyer. I do think the root of making cosmetically similar movements in closed case Rolex references are primarily driven by the demand for counterfeits that can be resold as real, and the same thing, to a lesser extent, drives the demand for boxes, filled out warranty cards, hang tags, and anchors. This is also part of the reason there is a strong secondary market for these sorts of real accessories.

I can tell a fake using 2 spots on the movement but I have to use a loupe for one.

I had a fake Rolex long time ago, knew it was fake.
I was taking care of a retired jeweler in ICU who spotted it quickly and asked where I got it.
A guy from work went to New York and bought a bunch of them, sold them for $40.00.
He told me Chinese bought the movements by the thousands from Switzerland, brought them to China and put them in the fake Rolex case.
He said they were actually good watches but once the battery died that was it,couldn’t repace it.
Lasted about 3 years, hept perfect time.

I have a Pepsi GMT automatic. Buddy bought it for me in Bangkok off a street vendor right out of central casting. I can pick it up right now and shake it twice and it will start running. lol

Just a testament to what movement can be made cheaply. The watch itself is obviously fake when held and actually is a bit undersized.

I actually showed it to a guy at my neighbors. He had a real one. Probably a late 60’s. Beautiful old matte dial. Whatever time those were. Old fella didn’t know what he had. Just a guy who dropped probably 500 bucks on what would be his beater. I showed him my shitty fake dial that got the style of modern markers right. Compared them to his. Told him the matte marking made it pretty damned nice. This was in 2007-2009. Can’t imagine what that thing is worth now. I have no idea about serial numbers and reference numbers and rarity.

Well, if it had a battery that was a dead giveaway that it was fake, unless it was an oyster quartz fake.
