Have friends in Maui and they are saying that traffic is gridlocked and people are really worried.

8.8 quake is only slightly smaller than massive Japan quake. That one altered earth axis slightly and devastated Japan. Tsunami threat is genuine this time.

How deep (or shallow?) is this one in comparison to the FUKishima killer in Japan

This one reported at 13 feet versus 21 (I think) in 2011. 8.8 compared to 9.1, largest ever.

Looks like Midway was or is about to get whacked . Significant water loss and rise fluctuations coming from a buoy.

The scale is logarithmic. 9.1 is much stronger than 8.8

Tsunami expert on the weather channel just said the models are looking to be accurate based on what they are seeing in midway. Same models predict 10 feet above sea level rises in Hawaii.

I'm watching a YouTube of Tokyo history where they got a 7.9 in 1923. Can't imagine how unsettling something like that it, even a smaller one

I'm ignorant about Hawaii topography. How bad is that for the major population centers?

I trust the models. It's in their jeans.

First wave is estimated for 12:17 AM CDT or 7:17 PM HST
3 feet is a big change for a DART sensor.

IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER.
SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

0717 PM HST TUE 29 JUL 2025

FURTHER MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS
WARRANT UNTIL THE THREAT TO HAWAII HAS PASSED.
