Apparently, banks aren't issuing pennies to businesses that come in and get change. That's what I've been told.

The solution is easy- if you pay cash, always carry 5-10 pennies with you. This will get your coin jug pennies back in circulation and give business XYZ pennies for change.

If they REALLY wanted to get my pennies, they should provide some incentive for me to take the time and roll my jar. Bring in pennies, get a discount on your next purchase, or something along those lines. Or better yet, the business can buy a cheap coin sorting machine and let customers use it

I also wouldn’t care.

99% of my purchases are done with amex anyway so I’m not fussed about “being scammed” out of less than 50 cents per year.

Tell them to discount the penny/pennies accordingly.

They are lying. Tell them to give you the leftover change if they want to pull that shite.

The US is no longer in the business of making pennies, so why are you surprised?

There are at least a quarter trillion in circulation. They are relying on the stupidity and laziness of people like you.

Just imagine if everyone rounded up all their penny jars and turned them in to their bank.
I've been throwing pennies in various large containers around the house for 40 years. I'm certain I have 20,000.
This country wouldn't run out of pennies for a 100 years.

tbh - is this even real?

Most people use cards nowadays - I can’t understand the shortage of pennies. Especially when so many places went cashless during covid, too

A decent sized convenient store getting a few pennies from each customer could easily pocket an additional $100 per day.

And a large corporation like Wal-Mark can profit a close to a million dollars per year simply by keeping Pennie’s.

More pennies get thrown on the ground or doomed to eternity in center consoles than get used as payment, and it’s been that way for decades.

I'll haggle over correct change. Give me my coins, they go in the bucket.

I really wish Congress would step in & provide a law for Trump to sign on how this needs to be handled. Either round up/down, have pricing to the .05 instead of .01, or some other way.

But the government, giving credit where it’s due, correctly decided to stop spending $.03 to produce $.01. Unfortunately in typical government fashion, they cause a problem and don’t provide a solution.

I'm sure there's a lot of old cash registers that don't have that capability when figuring tax percentage.

I run a small business. My bank (and every other local bank) stopped receiving shipments of pennies months ago. I stocked up on as many as they would let me get when this happened so as not to inconvenience my customers.

So now that I'm out, what the frick do you expect me to do about it? You may deal with a few transactions a month where you might be shorted a few cents. I'm faced with hundreds per day. That adds up a lot quicker for me in one month than it ever will for you in your entire life.

Use a credit/debit card or quit being a bitch.

Actually, quit being a bitch regardless. OTPoor

IMO, the business should eat the difference on cost.

It's a mostly free country. Just buy from a different business.

Most are eating the cost. .01-.04 = 00c
.05-.09 = 5c

If you know that you're going to pay with cash why not just make sure you've got some change, including pennies, in your pocket?

I keep one of those bank zip bags in my car's side pocket with coins in it, including pennies.

Most are rounding up and down now. My local grocery store is rounding everything down. We just need to price everything with the sales tax already included and it would fix it.

Seems sort of like a scam to me.

A business deciding to accept cash and not having the ability to make change doesn’t mean they get to pocket the difference, IMO.

I agree but your options are to wait for them to go to the bank for rolls of pennies, get a refund, or walk out with your purchase and never come back.
