Birmingham is a top 10 murder market most years, sometimes top 5. It just has some nice suburbs

Yep. I find the white flight exodus an interesting study in history. By the early 80’s, all the white people had moved out of the City of Birmingham and into the suburbs over the mountain (Hoover, Homewood, Vestavia, and Mountain Brook). There has been calls for a Metro gov’t for a while and the suburbs shoot it down every time (rightfully so IMO).

The neighborhood my dad and his family had lived in for generations is not an area you’d want to be caught in after dark. Maybe it will be gentrified one day and I can move back.

My wife used to live right on the edge of Ensley in the 70s when she was a kid

They moved to a different part of Birmingham in the 80s and white flighted out completely in the 90s

“Racist”

Such a scary word! Hate to break it to you but no one cares about being called a racist anymore. The other day the news told me cross walks are racist. The word doesn’t mean anything anymore.

BR was a little later than that. In 1970 this city was 70% white but when the forced busing was put in place in the 80s a good portion of the middle class left for surrounding areas. It's still a slow trickle to this day.

That's not racist that's just fact. Sorry if the truth hurts. Try driving thru most of those cities and this theory will be confirmed.

I have never lived there but my wife of roughly 2 decades is from there and her entire family still lives in the region so we go a lot.

Birmingham proper is pretty dangerous and has a large black population but some of the suburbs are really nice, quite frankly nicer than any we have in LA, and also pretty close to the city.

For example, Vestavia Hills and places like that are 5-6 miles from downtown vs places like the Northshore being 30-40 miles from downtown Nola.

The US did not import slaves. The British, Dutch and many African tribes and nations established slavery in the colonies long before the US became a nation.

The US fought a horrific civil war to end it. The more you know.

Okay. Thanks? Blacks have the largest amount of people who live in poverty than any other race, which is over 27%.

9.9% of whites live in poverty.

Poor blacks live in urban areas.

A part of poverty is crime and lack of education. Blacks were not allowed to go to most non HBCUs universities until the 60s and 70s.

Blacks were limited in education, jobs, etc until 1961 and even then, in reality it took longer than that

When I read "cities with the largest black population" I am thinking "okay?" but if you are saying these cities have a lot of crime and is simply saying its because black people live there.. Well, there is a little more to the story why its like that. White people had a slight head start over the blacks.

I lived in Ensley Highlands until I was three. Same time frame as your wife. All my dad’s people are from Central Park. Damn shame what that area around Princeton Hospital has become: Central Park, Five Points West, Ensley Highlands. I’ve considered slowly buying the old home places back and holding them.

My FIL still goes to Princeton Hospital. My wife said she lived on Bessemer Highway about 3 blocks from Central Park.
