re: Colorado School District Begins 4-Day School Week

Read about the reason why this is being done:
This district has the lowest teacher pay in the entire Denver area, leading to lots of turnover and low quality
The district has a much lower than average tax collection on a per student basis. The budget was in the red and voters did not pass a tax increase, so cuts had to be made.
You get what you pay for. I'm sure the teachers would have preferred a raise over having extended work days. In the end people are going to end up paying a lot more in child care than they would have if the tax had passed.
I would assume other factors include cutting the transportation and food budgets 20%. Plus one less day a week to run the heat, lights, and AC.

Most schools provide very affordable aftercare.

It's about saving money, and that's all there is to it. A building that isn't pumping out electricity for an extra day saves tons. I know of a few Louisiana schools that do the same thing. They put in an extra 1.5 hours per day and take an extra one off. Yes, teachers nag and moan and complain... They are the most annoying people in the world sometimes... and I'm a non-complaining teacher.

5 days a week isn't that bad at all. Kids dont do shite anyways. I'd rather be in school than out. I also think more kids will have time to do drugs and frick. Expect pregnancies to rise.

They did that in my cousins district last year. It’s s good thing and saves money.

Ours is $35 per day for all day care on holiday weeks etc(aka "day camp"). Its only $140 per month for after school care though.

Dick move unless parents get 4 day work weeks as well.
May have meant to be condescending, but imagine how hard it is for parents to have to juggle schedules for the 4 day weeks. Schools and all of their ephen holidays for teachers are very inconsiderate. Cannot pray, or establish religions, but we have no problem taking off two weeks for Christmas break and two days for Easter. Hipocracy knows no boundaries.

Sweetheart, I don’t let chicks like you raise my children. Because the first time my child came home bitching and complaining about having to work and being underpaid I would be most happy to show them what real work and being underpaid is all about (milking cows, building fences, bailing hay, cleaning hotel rooms, picking up trash/garbage). You keep feeling sorry for yourself and wishing for raises and handouts while working those 8-9 months a year and getting off of work by 3:30. It’s noble work you are doing. (I actually do believe it is noble work teachers do, but their endless complaining about low pay is comical, at best). Soldiers and police officers run from bullets for more work and less pay. And teachers have not had a significant pay cut since you were in college. You knew what you signed up for, you just don’t like your cut, Buttercup.

Colorado loves shite like this. Good for them..
I'm happy to let them figure out all the kinks and how it works best and then apply it to other places, of which Louisiana will be last and worst, as usual.
This. I'm glad people are willing to challenge the status quo and find out what works better.
And we wont necessarily be last place for this. There's always Mississippi!

The people this hurts is the bus drivers and cafeteria workers as they miss a day. But the rest of the district saves money in utility and other expenses. My cousin liked it as it allowed their test scores go up. I’m not sure how I’d plan for it in my SPED classes.

I am not bitter at any teacher that works hard and appreciates the enormous benefits, schedule that gives them many, MANY days off and they still do their job well. Not at all. Quite the opposite. I am most appreciative of them. It’s just the entitled ones that love to fuss and curse about their jobs like you that are somewhat annoying. You can always get another job if it is so bad, you know.
Guess you are up late planning your schedule for tomorrow, so I will let you get back to it, sweetheart (easy with the f-bombs, that stuff will get you in trouble and come back to haunt you if your administrators see it).

so, the savings comes only in reducing pay to school bus drivers?...
sounds like they will be raising pay to bus drivers next when they all decide to quit.

A Colorado school district says it will save about $1 million a year by giving middle and high school students Mondays off.
Wait, I thought Colorado was all flush with Mary J revenue. Why do they need to cut back to save money?
