So why should this be any different.

Because it’s a fricking pandemic of a virus we have never been exposed to.

That’s why.

And considering that hospitals are starting to see some relatively healthy people in their 30s, and 40s getting hit HARD by this(as in being placed on a vent)....this whole “only the old and immunocompromised need to worry“ isn’t necessarily true.

A “fricking pandemic” that has currently killed 13,000 people worldwide. Which is only 0.1% of the worldwide deaths this year.

For the people that don’t understand math or reading comprehension. That does not mean killed 0.1% of the world. That means of the 13 million people that have died this year worldwide, 0.1% of them have been from coronavirus.

Unfortunately, dumbasses don’t realize that even the most optimistic numbers have covid-19 more deadly and hospitalizing people at a significantly higher rate. Comparing h1n1 to covid19 is the equivalent of telling us you failed the GED test.

Are you seriously trying to compare a fricking peanut allergy to a highly infectious novel virus????

Please stay as safe as you can and thank you for being on the front line of this thing.
I can only hope that more people start taking this seriously than did yesterday and from here on out that # grows and the infected/dead # plateaus and starts to fall.
We can get back to arguing at a later date.

I am being completely serious. It blows my mind how there are people can't comprehend this.

There are some people who think this is some big conspiracy. There are those who think the government is blowing this out of proportion, etc. The way I see it is that this is something that no one wants to have to deal with (government, businesses, etc, etc) because it impacts all of us.

Despite my condition I am a relatively healthy person, however; I take this serious. I am not going to say I am concerned (because I am taking proper precautions), but I am aware. Also, my mom is in her 70s. I don't want to carry it and go to her house and give it to her.. I would think that would be an incentive for most people to take this a little bit more serious.

And while I take it serious, I don't allow it to keep me living in fear (which I think a lot of people, especially people who are trying to convince themselves this is "total hysteria" are doing.

All we can do is recognize it for what it is. Take proper precautions and have respect for others and if everyone does this.. We will get thought it sooner than later.

We should defer to scientists and engineers on this issue.
Doctors treat illnesses with drugs and technology developed by scientists and engineers.

Look at the names on the papers studying the efficacy of drugs for this virus. They are doctors. I mean got damn, have you ever bothered to read a medical journal?

Hey!

Olive branch accepted

I don’t consider myself on the front line cause I don’t do direct patient care anymore. But...since I’m now a infection control nurse....this is my focus at work. Trying to help keep staff and patients safe and providing education and guidance to make sure staff are using PPE correctly while conserving our supply.

Decisions and policies so significantly affecting hundreds of millions should not be made for a single person

Or 1000

Or even 10000

Meh. When this is over, we're going to see some huge shifts in numbers. For one thing, in some instances, we're hospitalizing people who test positive, but who aren't showing any symptoms. Why are we doing that if the whole "overwhelm our healthcare system" is the reason for the lock downs.

Any why the hell are we taking some cues about combating this from China?

Guarantee you we are not doing that at my hospital.

If they are well enough to self quarantine at home, they will be at home. It’s wasting a hospital bed and PPE.

its an election year and a republican needs to be de-throned.

So entire non-US countries are willing to shut down their economy / lives just because it is an American election year?

That's a really hot take.

I can’t believe people still even think that.

Takes a special kind of dumb to see what is going on worldwide and still think “yep, they trying to get Trump out”

I am pretty sure no one here is occupying space in a hospital if they test positive but have no symptoms.

Well I can't speak for every hospital so I should say that if some hospitals are doing it, it definitely isn't all of them.

Vast majority of us won’t know a single person who is killed by this.

Just to give us a rough idea:

Average person knows 600 people.

Approx 40% of the population will get the virus.

40% of 600 = 240

Mortality rate is approx 0.2%.

0.2% of 240 = 0.48

So there’s about a 48% chance someone you know will die from the virus.

This thread should have happened a week ago. Nobody cares anymore and 95% of the public is just dealing with it.

People that may be panicking are those with no income next week.

I think your decimal point placement is scruggling here

I believe this means half of one person you know will die

What have you seen?

I work in Chicago at a hospital and we have multiple ICU rooms open and shifts @emergency have been Increased, I’m curious? I also regularly visit Northwestern Memorial Downtown, an absolute ghost town, they converted a tower into their “corona” headquarters and have it fully under control. PLEASE tell us what you’re seeing so diffeeent.
