I've been crawfishing for over 20 years and I can honestly say this has been the worst start ever. People can get in a tizzy all they want, but that’s the truth the most I’ve ever gotten paid out the field was $4.50lb, right now I’m getting $6.50lb and I’m still losing money after bait and labor. It’s not a good situation all around.

Same here but people believe what they want to believe. I know high crawfish prices are a running joke on here, but most consumers have absolutely no idea what production costs are and how they have exponentially increased since covid and inflation came on the scene.

Buyers near me are paying $6 & $7 per pound live right now and still getting minimal amounts. Word from one buyer is that they will pay $8/lb starting on Monday to try and get more people to sell to them, but it will have little to no effect due to the limited catch currently.

All these people that say crawfish farms are a "cash cow" "don't pay taxes" and get supported by government subsidies don't have a clue. Every buyer issues 1099's annually for farmed crop and wild caught crawfish sold to them and any farms that received government help in the pandemic had to turn in past numbers to even qualify and create a basis for assistance.

Also as someone with a pretty good finger on the pulse of the basin harvest, don't expect the wild caught crawfish to help out much this season unless there is a drastic change in rain and floodwater up north coming down into the basin. It is historically dry and many areas that usually hold water have dried up completely. Any crawfish that survive these desparate conditions and emerge to drop young are stressed already as they have had to survive longer than usual in burrows or fighting for limited resources in wet areas with more exposure to animal predation. Plus the young of the year crop of babies will need 2 to 3 months of growth if they get warmer water conditions to reach a harvestable size and improve the volume caught.

This setup doesn't bode well at all for a year where Mardi Gras is in the early middle of February and Easter at the end of March. Looks like it will be a lean year for crawfish indeed.

The heat last summer severely impacted the rice crop, turning much of it to animal feed quality. That relentless summer heat could easily have laid the groundwork to harm this year's crawfish crop.

Lol. Those illegals coming across aren't working for their money baw. Taxpayers are providing it to them for free thanks to your overlords in DC.

The help that most farmers bring in are visa holders who come in every year and work for the same operations. There has been a change in the pay requirement that farms must pay those laborers and if the market conditions and production expenses were equitable, these increased labor costs would bear no problem to most of these big operators.

I pay no foreign laborers and everything caught in my ponds are handled by owner/operators. No way smaller operations can afford housing migrant workers with the astronomically rising costs of bait, electricity, equipment and fuel. Not to mention that you must provide these workers with a truck.

If anyone cares to place blame on crawfish prices this season, look no further than the weather last late summer/fall/early winter and at the fragile balance of a crawfish's life cycle. Man can only control their environment to a limited extent and unfortunately even the best operated farms were not able to minimize damage to their crops due to the untimely drought and heat in our area.

I heard a farner put out 10 test traps and caught 6 crawfish.
Not 6 lbs, 6 crawfish.
At that point it's not feasible to put out traps....

These are the realities of the current situation. My test traps were a little better than that but not by a whole lot. I haven't even put out my cages into the field yet because it's just not worth it yet despite the high market price right now.

Everyone complaining needs to keep in mind that most of your crawfish farms, myself included, are thousands of dollars in the hole already just in costs to maintain levees and equipment, prepare crawfish forage crops and flood up ponds. It is hard to describe these expenses where it would make sense to your average consumer, but just for an easy example my electricity costs for my water well has already since October cost me more than I was paying annually pre-covid.

Still I am thankful that I finally finished flooding up a week ago today and that my water quality wasn't affected by the drought. There is at least some hope of an improvement and profitable season. Some farmers I know don't have such an optimistic outlook.

Wait. Crawfish farmers are saying there’s some kind of catastrophic situation that occurred and now they’ll have to raise prices?!

This is just shocking. I can’t believe it!1

Stop shipping them out of state.

Absolutely nothing being shipped out of state currently. Hell most buyers around my area are lucky to even get a handful of sacks per day right now. Crawfish going to TX has no effect on the current market prices or availability. Hell some of my contacts in SE TX are catching more than we are here in Acadiana right now as each area's drought conditions were different the past several months.

I bet supply goes through the roof and the prices plummet to $20 a sack like it used to be.

And even though you won't believe it, once prices drop below $25 per sack, lots of people, myself included quit running due to profitability concerns. But yet everybody who has never operated a crawfish production business has always got all the answers to solve the industry's volatility in their "gotcha" posts.

Once again farmers don’t make the price. I’m thankful for people out there that are crazy for crawfish but at the end of the day all the bitching is ridiculous. Crawfish is a luxury not a necessity if you can’t afford it that’s completely fine just wait for the price to drop, but don’t sit there and bitch until you turn blue because it isn’t the price you want to pay.

Not even sure what this means.

Asian shrimp have flooded the market big time in the past few months if you want to talk about imports. The south La shrimp baws are hurting badly.

There is some truth to this in that this current administration's faux pas and enabling of inflation in fuel, labor and energy prices has trickled down to farmer's expenses and their bottom lines. But please don't let the facts get in the way of a good joke...

I'm not a big LPB supporter but here is a recent article that they put out that pretty much explains the dynamics driving the current crawfish market prices and shortage.
