Lake Pontchartrain froze over to about 20 feet off the shore. I remember my dad walking out on the ice, and my mom screaming at him - calling him an idiot - an that he'd fall through the ice and die.
I posted yesterday about two 13 year old boys in Louisiana who died from falling through ice on ponds during the 1989 freeze. That shite is dangerous. Two different ponds.

I am building my first ever Satsuma cage tomorrow. Pipe insulation for the trunk and mulch for a mound.

It was my senior year of high school in 1989, and during the freeze me, my college age brother, and 8 year old cousin took our 4 wheeler out on the frozen pond and were sliding around and yucking it up. Then the ice started to crack, and we hauled arse off just in time. Idiots we were.

Watching these temp drops as the front advances is just amazing.

Watching the arctic cold front blast through at @NWSCheyenne. We could see the density difference via waves in the air as it crossed the airfield. Drop from 43° to 7° in 15 min. Instant drop into the freezer. #WYwx

Update: Down to 3° now. Drop of 40°F in 35 minutes. Over a degree per minute drop. Impressive.

Just wanted to remind everyone about pets. Please get 'em someplace warm. I know most on here will , but if there are any who don't may your genitals get frostbite.

I plan on wrapping a towel around faucets with a 5 gallon bucket on top...
Dripping kitchen faucet and hoping for the best in BR. Plan to get under covers and watch movies with the kids for the day

That's all my grandmother ever did. She used old blankets and towels to wrap it, then tied or taped a garbage bag over the hydrant. She'd top it off with a bucket.

There is no such thing as cold, only absence of heat.

Other than the incredibly cold temps and wind chills, December 1989 was notable for the snowstorm that hit coastal areas of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas just three days before Christmas.
Jacksonville Beach, FL for example picked up 2.5 inches with some areas of extreme southern and coastal Georgia receiving as much as 6 inches

6pm Wed 12/21 - Here's the latest on what to expect from this arctic air outbreak.
Use tomorrow to take any remaining preparedness actions to protect the 4 Ps: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants. Temperatures will plummet tomorrow night and it will stay cold for days.

As we mentioned, temperatures will PLUMMET Thursday night behind an arctic cold front. Thursday evening ahead of the front, temperatures are expected to be in the 50s and 60s. By Friday morning, temperatures will be 30 to 40 degrees colder, with dangerous wind chills, too.

The cold temperatures will be accompanied by strong winds, leading to dangerous wind chills. Dress in layers and limit skin exposure to the cold if possible!
quote:
The unusually cold air mass will keep temps near/below freezing for a long duration. Some places may only briefly rise above freezing from midnight Thurs night to noon Sun. The long duration of sub-freezing temps will lead to more severe impacts from the cold.

How can you prepare?
As we say, protect the 4 Ps - People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants.
If you have to be out, wear a lot of layers and protect your skin from the cold.

TL/DR: It's going to be dangerously cold. Prepare tomorrow as temps plummet overnight. Much of the area will spend an unusually long amount of time below freezing through Sun morning. Protect people, pets, pipes & plants. Dress in layers & limit skin exposure to the cold.
