Monroe was once had Delta Airlines and the first Coca Cola bottling operation. An unrealized metropolis.
And headquarters to one of the largest Telecom’s in CenturyLink.
My how times have changed.

I edited my original post to include the link to Delta's history. I thought it first started in Monroe as well, but that isn't 100% accurate

Technically still there, but it’s a shell of its former self

They continued to have their corporate meetings in Monroe up until the late 1990's as a nod to their origin.
I always heard it was because Beidenharn was the largest stockholder in Delta. the stories say that one time a stockholder complained about the annual stockholders' meeting being held in Monroe. Bernard Beidenharn stood up and said "I'm Bernard Beidenharn. Welcome to my home town."

I always thought they started out in Tallulah.

Century moved out and donated two huge buildings to ULM, which cost a ton in upkeep, and were not being used. Musk, Meta, or some huge digital presence offered to buy it for a large amount of cash and ULM's president countered with double the price. The buyer walked away, as did the president when he was sent packing

Tallulah was actually their birth place. They started out doing crop dusting. The hangers were still there 20 years ago.
I wouldn't mention it if I were Delta either...

Monroe being a regional still has decent fares flying through Delta actually.

Yep, used to have it at the old Century Bank building in Funroe. I knew Bernard was the largest shareholder for a while. I had a fraternity brother who was really close to the Biedenharn family so I heard some stories. Kinda like they would hear all the bitching like everyone else in this thread from all the stockholders about the meeting location being in BFE Monroe and then at the very end they would say see ya'll here again next year. I think Delta pulled the plug and went to New York in '98 or '99.
As for origin, they started in Macon, GA as another company but moved to NE LA. Pretty sure Tallulah. At some point the parent company wanted to sell off the crop dusting operation so some investors in Monroe bought the spin off and renamed it Delta Flying Service out of Monroe so I guess technically the actual company was started in GA but they became Delta in Monroe.

A lot of people are unaware of how involved Louisiana was in early commercial air travel. The old Department of Public Works was heavily focused on expanding air transportation.

It looks like HDD was bought, moved, and renamed Delta. I guess technically we are both right! Lol
1928: C.E. Woolman, the principal founder of what would become Delta Air Lines, leads movement to buy Huff Daland Dusters. Renamed Delta Air Service for the Mississippi Delta region it served, the new airline is incorporated on Dec. 3, 1928. D.Y. Smith, President; Woolman first Vice President.

Louisiana pretty much sucks.
Too much political corruption….too little education.

True.
Then again, Louisiana people brag all the time about being from Louisiana.
And they’re beautifully, blissfully unaware as to how ridiculous they are.

As bad as Utah keeping the Jazz name, IMHO
Posted on 7/10/25 at 10:02 pm to LaBR4
Then again
The Jazz has been certified box office in SLC for over 40 years. That brand is untouchable.
Pro basketball is and always has been dog shite in New Orleans.

It was 96 because of the Olympics in Atlanta. I will say it was amazing back in the day having a delta plane land every hour either going or coming from Dallas or Atlanta

I was in Monroe once and it smelled bad. I don't know why but it did.
