I put everything in garbage. In the last year I’ve put:
A car battery
Paint
Broken mirror
Electronics
A taillight
Lawnmower tire
Etc
Have you seen them pick up trash? They don’t know what’s it in, they use a mechanical arm and there’s only one person doing it all and it’s the driver.

I once threw and smashed a few hundred 1000w mercury halide light bulbs in a dumpster and never saw the dreaded trash police
I was peeking out the windows at night for years!

I melt mine down and make black market Tesla batteries. They go for $19,999 installed

I bury mine in my neighbors garden

I put them in same place where I get rid of old tires, mattresses, paint, etc

The real question is: do you prep your 9v batteries before throwing in regular household trash?

Tell your friend he's a pussy.

I go through a lot of batteries with deer cameras etc. Save the old batteries in a small plastic bucket in a carport closet. When the bucket fills up, I take the batteries for recycling at the Battery and Bulbs store 3 blocks from where I work. Not a tree hugger at all, but I recycle a bunch of stuff.

I just throw them in the trash with the old car batteries and used motor oil.

A couple years ago I was driving to see the site where an in-law was building a house. As I’m getting close I see a garbage bin on fire underneath an awning between somebody’s house and the garage so I stop and alert them.
I happened to know them. Their best guess was batteries and aluminum foil.
I still throw batteries away but make sure there is no metal on the trash side and kinda separate them as I toss them in.
(Photo is not the actual can I saw burning)

I usually toss em at gators. Makes a funny noise if you connect with their skull
