I look forward to Saints of Newark which is a spin-off precursor to the Sopranos

intend to see Top Gun 2 in the summer.

It’s probably going to try to hard and be cheesy. But it will be awesome.

I'm not finding much of interest on Netflix, Prime or Hulu either. Once I finish longmire, Ozark and Bosch I don't know what I'll watch.

Dune

Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea. That’s how in touch I am to Hollywood and the MSM in general. I will go watch this one though even though I know there’s no way they could even scratch the surface of the depth of the books. I read the books over 40 years ago before it was a trilogy. Had to wait for the third and the fourth one to come out.

I think it was supposed to be released last fall but they delayed due to covid. It's one of the few movies I can remember being excited about in a long, long while.

I also think they're making it a two parter but I can't remember at this point.

I honestly think Master and Commander was the last movie I've seen in the theaters...and it should have won best picture that year - by far.

They should have rolled with that series.

Movies suck these days. It's all boom or bust, there are no "mid tier" movies anymore. Everything has to be a big budget blockbuster now.

Hollywood eliminated risk. No different than what baseball is doing with the 3 true outcomes bullshite.

For 100 years Hollywood said we have a budget of 500 million. We'll make

2 - 100m blockbusters
7 - 50m movies
10 - 5m movies

and we'll be profitable every year and every couple years make a mint.

And now, the box office has given them a formula with almost zero downside. Purchase an established IP for any amount, spend 300m filming, edit a CCP cut for China, make a billion dollars. Or, if you aren't Disney, Comcast, or ATT you get a subpar IP and spend 200m filming, and go bust. But there's no luck, no risk, no guessing whether audiences will "go for it".

Studios exist to make money, not to make art. No studio head is gonna say - man, I'm tired of making billions of dollars on Fast and the Furious: Chinese Thunder. Let's make $19m on this next one.

An interesting aspect of being a media hipster...

It used to be the case that the companies had no way of tracking who was really interested in some of this media...like westerns, gritty crime movies, documentaries...stuff that doesn't get released through mainstream channels.

For example, if you wanted to listen to the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, you probably couldn't find it in your store. You had to get a buddy who you knew had the album to burn you a bootleg CD. The industry had no way of tracking that data.

Now with streaming services and Spotify, the media companies have a way of seeing what we truly do like. Now they can see that there are millions of Americans who like shows Firefly and musicians like Frank Zappa.

It would be interesting if they actually used this data to inform their decisions for their mainstream fare.

Anyone who watches and enjoys the Fast and Furious movies truly is an imbicile.

No, they made a palette-swap remake:

Before Covid, I saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, being a huge Tarrantino fan.

That was really the last movie I wanted to go see.

Before that, it had been awhile since I wanted to go see anything.
