Pearl River County and Hancock County used to be beautiful, clean places.

I’m so sick of the fricking humidity in Houston. I like it here and my job is here, but the weather is just depressing. I don’t need a white Xmas. But can I at least turn off my AC in winter? Can it not be mid-80s and 90% humidity in late November? Fall/winter here is just a series of short cool fronts. Soon as the front moves on, we’re back to hot muggy days.

What? No tazers at ball games? No outboards in 55 gallon drums? No trucks up on blocks?
Sounds dull and impoverished.

Johnson City
I was there in July visiting family. We were seated at a "hole in the wall" (Pennyman's diner) for breakfast, because that's where the locals told us to go. First thing the male waiter says when he comes to the table: "Just to let you know, we have kitchen staff here that don't know what the hell they're doing. Anyway, whatcha want?"
And the breakfast was very good.

I love the demographic makeup of that area. It's so peaceful.

Moved here in 2019 and it was the best decision I've made. People complain Knoxville is getting too crowded. But for good reason because its awesome.
The traffics not bad like people complain. I can get across town in 5 o'clock traffic pretty routinely. And its like 15-20 miles.

East Tennessee is awesome. Like to keep it that way if we can keep all the foreigners (Yankees and people from California) out.

Hell, I went in a Walmart, had zero issues, and the staff were all friendly. This place feels like paradise for the moment.
What town or city are you close to or in? I am sure demographics is playing a big part.

Does Tenn or NC have a better tax structure for retirees?

Pretty even tbh. Tennessee taxes you more indirectly. You’ll pay higher sales tax, etc.
Slight advantage to Tennessee because of their lack of inheritance tax I guess.
Bryson City and the surrounding area in NC is superior to ETN, imo.

This is why my plan when I'm older, probably in about 20 years (unless society just completely collapses before that), is to move back up to West Virginia.
I partially grew up in West Virginia, but like many from that part of the country, ended up leaving for a warmer climate and obviously better economic opportunities. I've lived in Florida for 18 years now and for the most part really love it. With that said, Florida is going to keep getting worse and worse in terms of population growth and traffic. In 20 years I cringe how bad it could be. Just too many people coming here that is ruining what used to be a paradise.
Part of me does miss the colder weather and the snow, but I don't want to live in snow until I am retired and no longer have to wake up at 6:00 a.m. and warm my car up for an hour and scrape ice and snow off my car. I do not miss stuff like that at all.

Because upstate SC is so much better. Clemson is literally surrounded by trailer parks.

Yes with spotless workboots, trucker hats, impeccably trimmed beards, and new Broncos with $50k in mods that will never go offroad. I cannot stand those guys. Was at a farmers market today and saw a bunch of them.

Funny, was looking at E. TN and W. NC towns this AM.
We'll be pulling the plug on the Austin area in a couple of years and looking to get back that way...
Jefferson looks nice.
