NC has some great beaches. Outer banks is amazing
Yes, the Outer Banks area is nice. It's also like 8 hours from Western NC/Eastern TN, so not exactly a few hours away.

What??? How is your ESL class going?

It is a great area. Have a place near Mountain City, TN. Watauga Lake is beautiful and not many people on it. And I've been down Copperhead Rd.

I live in the Asheville area and don't consider the NC beaches at all. SC beaches like Edisto and Pawleys are much nicer and much closer.

just bought a cabin outside Cashiers. Hopefully the fishing is up to par. Looking forward to a few weeks of cooler temps than we have here in Houston in August.

was hunting in the East TN hills and just about everywhere i went, people stared at me like they'd never seen a black person before. they weren't rude, but they weren't nice either. they just looked at me like i was a ghost. i wondered how many of them had left the county before.
You should have saved them from Mongo.
The women would have been very thankful.
They would probably even cook you some breakfast...
before you left them wanting more.

I’ve lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, NC, Alabama, SC, Louisiana, Japan, California, New Jersey, and Maryland.
I’ve traveled throughout the US, Mexico, the Middle-East, and parts of Asia. You can say I’ve been outside the south, bro
I think the West is awesome but the COL and the winter is just brutal. I think this area gives you the most in quality of life

Gatlinburg used to be nicer in the off-season. Now unfortunately there isn't one really. It's year round land whales drinking free samples of fake moonshine. Or church conventions.
It has its moments when you can catch it right. Got to get away from Sevierville and GBurg to see the gorgeous scenery.

We vacation in that area every year. It's beautiful, but it takes you over an hour to go 20 miles on those mountain roads. Could not live there full time.

We talked about what small town you would pick to live in the country.
I said Sedona, Arizona.
If it's small to mid-sized city I'm going Chattanooga.

Economically moving here was a big win. Moved the kids from private schools into the public schools. Auto insurance half the cost. Home insurance half the cost. No personal income taxes. Property taxes a little higher. Overall COL was much lower.
Meth heads are bad. The mountain people come down on Saturdays to do the family outings at Walmart. Plan accordingly.
Summers not as hot and not as humid. Spring/Fall lasts longer. Winters are cooler and ice storms can be interesting. Not much snow.
The drive to Hoover for the SEC baseball tournament isn't too bad.
The availability of places to hike and camp are incredible but the duck hunting sucks.

Moved to Maryville Tn. last summer. Besides LSU football and crawfish, I don’t miss a thing...

Private schools are for places like Louisiana where you have to get your kid into a decent magnet school. Plenty of cities with good public schools in East TN. Just have to take the school system into account when choosing where you move

Check out the low country boil at the Shrimp Dock. Not the same as the crawfish you are used to...but the closest thing you will find around here.

I'm in Asheville too and the housing market is stupid expensive. WNC pay grade is still stuck in the 90's in my opinion.
