I hear all the time the lie that there is meaning in work,
quote:Dumbasses who probably have no job or a shite job.
yet people spend unreal $$ on games of chance every day just so that they can quit working
quote:Some people work until their 70s. Some want a change of pace in their 60s. That doesn't mean what they did wasnt rewarding. Why would people who've saved millions by their 50s keep working if it held no meaning and they actually didn't want to?
People invest and budget their whole lives just so that they can retire
That you've wasted decades on a meaningless path doesn't mean all others have as well.

Meaning as in you owe society and yourself work in order to be fulfilled. Your response was to talk about physical health.
In the post I replied to, you said this:
quote:
No one wants to work.
I raised physical health as something people also don’t like doing, yet has meaning.

Meaning as in you owe society and yourself work in order to be fulfilled
Something can have meaning in more than one way. Your definition is one way. Another way is that by working, you are integrated with the society you live in. We know this is beneficial because people who can’t find work or chose not to often degenerate and suffer from diseases of despair.
quote:
Also, I haven't once suggested that someone has to hate their job in order to not want to work.
Maybe I should have worded that better. My point if someone is playing the lottery and hoping to never work again, that might not be the solution to their particular problem with the work they’re doing.
EDIT: Btw, I know this because I’ve been that guy. We probably all have had a crap job that we hated and wished it would go away somehow, even a lotto winning pipe dream. But the only realistic solution to this is to find another job.

Or AI will be able to do everything, in which case no one will work, we’ll all be allocated a government decided stipend, and the proverbial ladder will be forever pulled up.

Exactly and I’m really not understanding how people are coming to any other conclusion.
They’re saying “everyone will have all their needs and wants provided for”. No we flipping won’t.
If AI is doing all productive work, we will get what they (the people who control the AI) decide to give us.
And that’s the very best outcome because it assumes that humans can actually control a truly generalized AI that is able to act in the world. If “they” can’t, I think the likely outcomes are grim.
There are so many “ifs” to bridge to even get remotely close to the utopia some people are convinced we’re heading.

The problem won't be work. We will eventually automate ourselves out of the need. The problem is and will always be scarcity of resources. An "every thing is free" society will quickly fall to rationing.
If robots handle everything, how would the availability of resources change? Can robots not create and corral resources? Just because something is "free" doesn't mean you'll be allowed to have an infinite quantity of it.
Also, according to some in this thread, everyone will die young due to mental and physical deterioration from lack of fulfilling work. That should free up some resources.

There will always be human achievement. Athletics and music and art and stuff like that aren’t going anywhere.
There’s lots of ways to contribute to society without punching a clock.

How are people going to earn money?

To most people it already is.

Work provides unnecessary stress, Im counting the days. Should be retired before 50.

So exactly where will this be coming from?
Automation will be the work force for the govt and big businesses. It’ll be cheaper for the govt to provide utilities and enough income for people not to work.

Actually a lot less ifs.

Imagine how different your life would be if work was "optional"
So how do we decide what houses people live in, what restaurants we eat at, and where we sit on a plane?
We may not need humans to accomplish tasks (if that is the implication) but we certainly need tasks to determine productive worth.

My job is less than 1% of who I am and I wouldn’t have it any other way
I spent about 50 hours per week working. There are 168 hours in a week. So I spent nearly 30% of those years working. I get that you don’t want to define yourself by work, but considering that I spent about 56 of the remaining hours in bed, leaving only 62 hours to define myself by doing other things, I’d say 1% is a bit low.

Simple question.
Who is going to be able to buy his crap?
Better start shutting down all those AI Data Centers, Chip manufacturing…..better yet don’t break ground.
Having worked with and learned directly from the elite…..at times the most idiotic statements come from immature minds.
In that moment you know you could steal all his crayons.

You should structure your investments around that philosophy. I’m investing, alongside private equity, in data center industry panel fabricators and engineering firms.
