Then why participate in this thread? Was all the shite you wrote cathartic?

Most recent kings of “DC Mardi Gras” have spent a million plus

That shite has gotten totally out of hand. Of course for DC a decent chunk of that is written off as a business expense.
ETA: to clarify I mean that many of the expenses are paid by the participant’s businesses. After all isn’t that what DC Mardi Gras is? A big multi-sector networking conference?

They couldn't pay me $100k to be in any parade. People paying that kind of money, for what?? Is this some type of status symbol for morons? What is the payoff if that is the expenditure? If that is for Endymion, what does it cost for Rex??? I don't get it.
Poor

All of it has gotten out of hand. It is absolutely keeping up with the joneses, or a dick measuring contest. However, when you live and die in the see and be seen crowd, then it is a mandatory part of life/business.
On top of that, much of the old NO krewes are the blue blood family money types. Money is different to them. God bless them.

I don't know about Endymion, but a friend of mine's 21 year old daughter was the queen of one of the smaller parades and the whole thing cost him a little north of 100k, but a lot of that was throwing a party, limousines, dresses, etc. I don't know the fee for the krewe.
ETA
My friend was not happy about it but his wife insisted.

A guy I know is supposed to be king of Thoth in a few years.
He told me he expect to spend $75k.
Most of that is parties

Agreed. However what someone wants to spend their money on is their own perogative

I don't disagree.
I remember an article a few years back comparing relative philanthropy rates between big southern cities, and New Orleans was the lowest. It also mentioned that if you considered the amount people spent on Mardi Gras, it was about the same.

I have a couple friends that were King in Houma for Hercules. They spend anywhere from $25-80k.

Couldnt pay me to attend any mardi gras event. From the videos and pictures sent to me yesterday from parades it looks like the definition of hell. Only thing i could imagine to be worse would be a cruise.
I've been to parades and on a cruise and both rank with the worst experiences I've had in life.

I was good friends with girl back in HS/College who was a maid in Endymion one year and a queen the next. I was her guest both years. Not sure how much it costs today but I would assume at least $100K to be the queen.
I attended the parties/festivities/VIP table at the Extravaganza, etc. I have to say that to this day it was such a memorable experience, and I would love to do it again or even for my daughter if I could afford it. And afford it means to be in a position that you barely know that the money is gone. It was a fun expense for them. We lost touch but if I ever saw her or her family in person today I would thank them again for the experience.
Experiences like that are unique and an amazing bucket list item for anyone involved.
And yes the connections aspect is great.

What’s the king or queen spend once announced to actually be king/queen?

Also, it’s hard for some of us to understand, but to certain people spending six figures on something just isn’t that big of a deal. They got money to burn.
Yeah, but try to sell something to them. They will haggle every last penny from you.

I heard the queen in the parade i ride in the first weekend paid 60k this year.
Posted on 2/15/26 at 9:33 am to Geauxzilla
How much is required and how much is optional? A king has spent over $100k in Houma but that is because they wanted to
