I think it’s only a matter of time before people around the world start to really push back and attack these types of places, tech pushing AI, etc. Especially in more radical pro worker areas like France, etc with histories of things boiling over.

I still think we’re too fat, happy, and distracted.

I'm convinced that these are DoD funded and it's just 2020's version of ARPANET.

Not sure why people are so bothered by them. It’s the ‘new normal’ if you want the technology advantages we have.

Like them or not, they are vital for research and national defense.

This. People always say new tech creates new jobs to use and maintain the new tech. This isnt the case this time. AI replaces far more jobs then it creates, by a landslide. The money saved wont trickle down, its just going to be harder and harder to live.

The product that Data Centers are producing is changing the world at this very second. People will get over the Data Centers once construction builds out but it is needed for our civilization to take the next steps forward.
If you can guarantee that the gain outshines the cost, sure.

Here is a clip from an article on data center electricity cost impact from January.

quote:

Residential electricity rates were up 5.2% in October from the same time in 2024, according to the monthly electricity report released by the Energy Information Administration. Electricity costs for areas near data centers increased by as much as 267% compared to five years ago, a Bloomberg News analysis found last year.

Here is a quote from an article referencing the energy demand of these centers.
quote:

But AI is particularly energy-hungry, requiring enormous amounts of computing power compared to previous technologies, says Peskoe. (One study from MIT estimated that 4.4% of all electricity in the U.S. was consumed by data centers in 2023.)
That was in 2023. What percentage of all electricity will be consumed by data centers by 2030?

The electricity demand will continue to rise due to the construction of these centers and, unless you can guarantee that the corporations building them will solely eat the cost, we will suffer the increase in costs in an already more expensive world.

The question I have is will and how quickly might the tech outpace the need for these huge buildings?

I guess we can make an indoor soccer field out of these structures when AI is done.

Yes i can guarantee that.

The amount of new power generation facilities that are planned in the near future is astonishing. Most occurring behind the meter dedicated for Data Center consumption.

Everyone needs to understand that the people and the minds behind all of this are vastly superior to the general public...sorry thats just the truth. This isnt about making a quick buck its again about changing the world.

What artificial intelligence is capable of producing and is going to produce is hard to explain and comprehend for the common folk. This is unfortunately a case of "We know better and we know what's good for you"

Everyone is all worried about their fricking utility bill going up a few $s (which is such a short sighted view) and under the assumption that there will not be any more water and that water is going to be polluted you dont think these people have already thought of and planned for all this?!

We don’t need smart homes, smart cars, animated persona on fb, and AI. AI and these data centers are going to destroy us. If anyone is laughing now, are you not worried for your young children, grands, and future kids and grands? I am.

Indians don't do racking and stacking, it's manual labor that is below them. The Indians will be doing work remotely, but the rack and stack monkeys will be local. I can teach a high school drop out how to do most of that work.

Yes, I am sure those who will lose their jobs/get replaced by AI and those who have seen their electricity bills increase upwards of 267% will take great solace in what you have posted.

I know I will.

They should have a much larger % of revenue/money going straight to local tax funds for schools, infrastructure, etc.

But if one small town proposes that, they pass and go to the next.

We need a way to band together to force that regardless of where they end up building. That is anti-capitalist, but these things are an abomination if they are not creating financial stability for the towns they are in.
