For the younger generation, where were Murphy's and Bengal?

Didn't you say you lived near Kevin in Franklin? Ask him about this story next time you see him.

Murphy's was in the old University Shopping Center on State Street, right next to the movie theater.

The Bengal was down Highland Road toward downtown. On the left coming from campus. I guess about a mile or so from the campus gates. Basically in the hood.

It was directly in front of the Chase bank that's still there. That spot is currently some apartments.

no, Travis McNabb is who lives down the street and I don't think he came along until much later.

one mile precisely. something about a bar having to be at least a mile from campus at the time it was built ISTR is why it was where it was

I hate what they did with that whole area, by the way. It looks like dogshit. That shopping center should have been built facing State Street, among other issues.

I think you're right. I know it was one of the oldest bars still operating (think it opened in the '50s, or maybe earlier) and I recall it having something to do with a rule like that.

The Bengal used to have $5 drinking with Lincoln on Thursday nights. All you could drink draft and well drinks for $5 till 1:00.

Snorkles used to have nickel draft on Wensday nights, the same night at the Tiger had .25 draft. I remember Snorkles floating 32 kegs before midnight and shaq towering over the crowds passing out beers.

No you wouldn't. You'd have extremely high alcohol tolerance like the rest of us who experienced it do. Great times back then.
