It sounds like they connected him with the Riverside killing and then connected that to the Zodiac case. The riverside killing was the exact same circumstance, with the note sketched into a desk at the school where the body was found. The handwriting and wordage were spot on, but for some reason the authorities were adamant that it wasn’t the same killer (there’s even a scene in the movie where the L.A. cops don’t even want to consider the zodiac as the perpetrator)

I have always wondered if the Zodiac would reveal himself on his deathbed or (through a lawyer or some other means) after death. Kind of like Mark Felt did after decades of speculation on the identity of Deep Throat.

Except that most people don't die on a deathbed able to talk. Most either day unexpectedly or otherwise unable to communicate.

As fricked up as his actions were you gotta be impressed by his ability to leave clues and still get away it. Talk about an evil genius

Is it that hard to read the article ? There’s way more to it and the letter they decoded is a smoking gun

If he wanted to be identified after death, I think he probably would have left the means behind while still in good health. Maybe an envelope somewhere in his house that will be found.

But who knows? It would be interesting to know what happened to him. It’s definitely one of the biggest mysteries in crime history.

Me too. And I get that he may have died unexpectedly, but it seems he was so impressed with himself and how clever he was, that it’d have been hard to not let everyone know about even after death. Unless the murders stopped because he died suddenly—even if he were in jail for something else, I think it would have come out—or he had kids and grandkids that he wanted to spare the fallout. Although, even though lots of serial killers have families, this dude was at least a sociopath and likely a psychopath, so supposed to be incapable of empathy. But I wonder how that extends to family.

I didn’t read the article and haven’t read up on the Zodiac in a while, but I was under the impression that it was pre-DNA (if he even left any) to have ever conclusively connected the same guy to all the murders and if all the ciphers were legit and capable of being solved they would have been by now, without some sort of confession—even post-mortem—it was gonna be pretty much impossible to ever be able to 100% know who it was. Could have been more than 1 person.

Or am I wrong and detectives have more connecting evidence than we know and are just waiting for that last peace of the puzzle? I had just assumed (maybe wrongly) that this mystery was destined for a Jack the Ripper-like history, forever intriguing, but basically unsolvable.

I plan to in a minute.

Wouldn’t this be all over everywhere if that gun was so smoking? Seems like something “new” like this comes out right before a History Channel show is set to debut. Though I concede, having not read the article, I am likely talking out my arse.

Here's their press release with all the info

The press release doesn't sound like they're saying it's *solved*:

quote:

Forensic Evidence Stored for 55 Years by Police Could End ‘Zodiac’ Mystery
But agency with DNA, found on dead coed, won’t consider the madman – allegedly just identified!

They're more than anything putting Riverside PD on blast because Riverside PD won't let them test the DNA they have under Cheri Jo Bates's fingernails against Gary Poste's because Riverside PD insists Cheri Jo Bates wasn't killed by the Zodiac.

Not that I am skeptical, but I am skeptical based on that evidence...

yep, who goes to the trouble of creating elaborate code just to then include his real name? more likely he included a fake name to further toy with those trying to crack the codes

it doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure out if he was going to sign his name to the note he wouldnt have created the code to hide his identity in the first place. but then we have the eff-bee-eye working on it so they think they cracked the case since no one will ever be able to claim otherwise. at least they didnt say it was trump did it

That’s not true, that’s Robert Graysmith bullshite. And he made up a lot of bullshite.
The desktop poem was found many months later in a storage room and there is no indication when the desk was in use. The poem also gets facts wrong, whoever was the subject of the poem was wearing a red dress, Bates was wearing red Capri pants. Finally the poem was scratched into the wood surface of the desk and therefore isn’t even a handwriting sample,

Agreed. This reads like it is a promo for another BS reality show about the search. They just made one of these on the Zodiac Killer not too long ago.

I'd like to believe but it sounds like BS.

I think this is the same group that says they’ve solved the DB Cooper mystery, yet I’ve yet to see any official confirmation the case is actually solved. Maybe it’s legit, or maybe these people just like publicity. Let’s see if we find out.

Also, I think it’s pretty widely accepted that Zodiac killed Bates. Someone should send the memo to the Riverside cops…
