I helped change out a turbine on an A-10 once. Also got to be part of chaining one down and live firing the gun stationary. It was impressive. A-10 crew chiefs always seemed to be cooler than other birds. 16 guys were the lamest. Like a bunch of short dudes with a chip on thier shoulder.

A10’s were at England Air Force Base in Alexandria until the base was closed. Been a long time. Early 90’s I think.

They also had an Air Force reserve unit at Belle Chasse, one of their A-10s during Desert Storm shot down an Iraqi helicopter. The aircraft picked up the nose art "chopper popper" and a crawfish throwing a lightning bolt

I used to fish Kincaid a lot in the afternoons. The range where the A-10s practiced was very close,to the south of the lake.I could, hear them shooting
the cannon, they would frequently fly low over the lake and circle back to the range. It would last from 4pm until 5 pm.
Pretty cool watching and listening to them.
You could forget about catching a bass while all that was going on.

Man, that brings me back to my childhood. We had an A-10 base in my town I would see them flying around several times per day. They were sometimes low enough to see the pilot wave at us!
Same here when England AFB in Ellick was still open and A-10s would fly out of there. Nothing like setting in a deer stand and an airplane flies over you so low you can see the pilot look down at you.

I built an A-10 many years ago*. Used to watch the 926th Tactical Fighter Group practice strafing runs when they were at Alvin Callender Field near NOLA.
165 Warthogs were deployed to Operation Desert Storm and flew over 8,100 sorties, losing 4 planes, two of which were able to return to base but lost on landing due to damage which affected control of the aircraft.
The A-10 has a backup manual control system (cables and pulleys - think driving a dumptruck without power steering). One interesting story of an A-10 in low-level ground support in Baghdad which took over a hundred hits from anti-aircraft fire and lost hydraulic controls:
The pilot managed to fly the plane an hour back to Kuwait and successfully land it. Colonel Kim Casey Campbell, a woman, who flew more than 100 combat missions in a 24 years career.
*Edit to add: a 1/24 model, not an actual airplane!

The Air Force Reserve Unit in Belle Chasse used to have these in the late 80's and 90's. A-10 Warthogs are a seriously bad arse aircraft dedicated to destroying armor, and they thrive at it. They cemented their legend during Desert Storm.
We called them Sky Tanks!

How much would you sell that for?

The roar of that cannon was pretty awesome as well.

I worked that exact aircraft. Excellent job.

Very nicely done.
My brother was a Warthog mechanic during Desert Storm. He said he has vivid memories of SCUDs and eating goat and sand.

23rd TFW are the lineal descendants of the AVG/Flying Tigers, who became the 23rd Fighter Group when they were incorporated into the USAAF.
And, as some have mentioned, they were based in Alexandria at England AFB.
Used to see them fly over our place in Grant Parish.
