Yep, my mom traced ours back the old fashioned way through church records at the library, all the way to the original Jamestown settlement. My first ancestor in the new world's name is on a plaque there, same last name too.

Someone posted about the church records earlier. It was a Catholic priest that worked on them, but I don't think the information was limited to catholics.
That was 30 years ago, so I don't remember the details other than that they were at the library.

dude at work started tracing his ancestry and would come to work every day and tell us about it...suddenly, he stopped and refused to talk about it any more.
I would truly love to find out what he found that shut him down...

This is how I imagine this goes for some people:
Wow this is awesome. It makes me want to trace my ancestors. All I know is that I was adopted from somewhere in the Seattle area in 1972 and that my Dad's name was "Ted" and that he liked Volkwagons. I also know he died in Florida some years later but that's all I got.

You know his name and you probably remember a few details...

I've just started looking into it but it is interesting .
I have confirmed that I am 4th cousins with a famous CW singer which is interesting .
My sister has really gotten into it and she has found some similar famous people.
To really get into you need to do the DNA tests for both maternal and paternal lines. That can really tell you of any famous/infamous ancestors.
My sister and I don't share the same father so my heritage is a little different than hers.

That my great, great grandfather was in the "human resources" business in St. James Parish in the mid 1800's, and that he eventually went on to found the town of Abita Springs.

Ok, thanks. The Catholic church records are a great resource, listing births, marriages, deaths. Some parishes are missing records because of fire, but those who have them will usually allow access.
Great you were able to trace your ancestors back that far.

I always assumed it was a Alabama dating site.

No, but "Find a Grave" is a fantastic resource if you just want birthdates and dates of death.
5 minutes on that website traces my family all the way back to the 1700s.
I didn't discover anything out of the ordinary, but it is neat to see the earliest recorded family members show that they were born/died in North Carolina. That makes a lot of sense given that area of the US was settled before moving farther west. It's nice seeing history play out in real life like that.

agreed...I found that some of my ancestors were buried nearby where I grew up and I had no idea that was the case...
