Tree service prices vary massively (in my experience) even in normal times.
It's one of the few expenses where I really do get 3-4 quotes because they vary so much. Had a 80 foot red oak taken out a few months ago where the quotes came in at like 1200, 2200 and 4800

I’ve always used Scott’s Tree Service & they’ve done a quality job & haven’t priced gouged me or neighbors. The guy handling Hammond Covington area has a skid steer & stump grinder. 337-660-6280. Best of luck.

When hurricane Michael came through here, there was one local company that had always been a little more expensive than everyone else. When the storm hit, they cut all the trees i needed cut for the same price they had quoted me the year before. They were the only company that didn't rape people during the storm. Needless to say, they are now everyone's go to around here.

are the trees close to the house?
my neighbor had a tree removed next to his house and it was like $8k but thats because they had to have a giant crane lift the pieces over the house a piece at a time

probably hard to enforce but in FL price gouging after a storm is against the law, and FL is all about rules

exactly why services should be impossible to "gouge". even in normal times, they're all over the place

Buy 2 nice Stihl saws, extra chains, sharpeners, some rope, a come along, and take care of it yourself if possible.
I say 2 saws because if you are into a cut and one dies or has issues, that backup is nice to have!
I have been running a chainsaw for 30 years, so I am comfortable with most cuts. We had a tornado come thru and saw the same bullshiat with the costs, so we just drove around chopping stuff for free. The local stihl dealer was there with a mobile trailer to tune and sharpen for free.
If you find a trustworthy person, make sure everyone you know gets their info.

Prices are always highest just after a storm when trees need to get removed from homes ASAP and the tree people know issuance will be paying for it. In 2 weeks, prices will have come down a lot

My sister had 3 trees cut down last year, outside Atlanta. It cost a little over 15k. They were very tall trees (over 50). They had to take down the fences, guys had to use harnesses and take it down in sections. It was a couple of rolloffs worth and they had to haul all of it out, then grind the stumps. She got a couple of quotes and they were in the same ballpark. Nobody can drop a full grown tree, in a neighborhood and bring in all that equipment for 1k a tree..

Call a baw from Mccomb, MS area. They’ll gladly drive the hour and quote you probably 1/2 the price

High demand in an area where there is a shortage of gas, utilities, available food.Either pay the price or do it yourself
This is basic economics. Those workers have to deal with higher prices and the headache of lack of services and such just like the locals, so they charge more.

2011 I had a large diameter white oak fall on my house. It was $5K which was more than expected to cost. But, capitalism…..and I needed to get it off quickly to get a tarp up there. I had punctures and not a roof collapse. The tree guy pinned the tarp as well.
We are considering putting in a pool and would require removing a large oak in the back yard. I was quoted 6k to cut it down and haul it off and dig up the stump. So honestly 5-8k to cut up and haul off in a disaster zone to me isn’t that bad. Tree removal has gotten expensive

Never pay a deposit especially in a disaster zone where there is plenty of work
