Work with the nutritionist and get your microbiome tested by Viome.com. They will let you know exactly what not to eat.

Not long after I turned 50 I had a hypertensive encephalopathy event, BP +290/181. Hemorrhagic stroke, kidneys ruptured and cardiac arrest. I was 5'8, 140 lbs and worked out regularly. It's been many years and I'm only on verapamil. I changed my diet and lifestyle. You can take care of it if you get serious.

I've come to learn that it's not only fat people.
I'm 6'1 185 and mine was terrible (160/90ish) as I moved into into my early 30s. Come to find out, I have a genetic hormonal imbalance. Once I took pills more targeted for that, BP normalized almost right away. This kinda thing affects 5-10% of people with high BP evidently.
Moral of the story: Make sure you advocate for yourself and press your doctor to find the right answer for meds if you need them. You will probably have to try several meds and doses before finding what works for you.

Remember HBP is inflammation of the blood vessels.
Take steps to limit inflammation

It's more important to focus on what you're not eating- fast food, processed foods, added sugar, added sodium, oils, stop putting shitty processed "cheese product" in everything, etc...

should have said retain fluid. A couple people told me they gained 20lbs or so because of the side effect of their meds.
Many BP meds contain something for fluid retention and this actually benefits BP.

I too take Coreg (carvedilol) for high blood pressure and some heart problems and it has done me a world of good. It has not only lowered my blood pressure, but also lowered my heart rate and strengthened my heart. I have had no side effects or weight gain and am glad my doctor put me on the medicine. If you have more questions, just let me know.

The edema has been confined to ankles. It’s not returned as bad as it was when I first saw a cardiologist about it. They tried a diuretic first to handle blood pressure and edema but had success only with the edema. (Therefore the addition of Carvedilol which has worked fairly well once the original dosage was halved.) Bad knees badly compromise my ability to work my legs properly which would normally help muscle out the excess fluid. If I were able to walk a few miles daily reasonably pain free I believe I’d be on top of the excess fluid.
Weight gain hasn’t been a problem with the Carvedilol but I attribute that to ketogenic eating for several years. I can’t comment from experience whether or not weight gain is an unhappy side effect of the medicine. My chief complaint was it promoted edema and, two 6.25 mg pills daily left me lethargic, foggy headed, and exhausted all the time.

The first two comments say burn more calories than you consume and have a 2-1 downvote ratio. It’s absolutely bizarre. A tiny little pill is going to make you gain weight regardless of your caloric intake?
Eat real food and/or exercise and you won’t gain weight. If you eat enough real food AND exercise you probably won’t need the medication you’ve been prescribed.
